ITT Post about what /ck/-related presents you received from others or got for yourself this year. Can include special-ordered ingredients, appliances, a new knife or utensils, one of the Hickory Farms meat & cheese gift baskets, etc.

I got myself pic related and HOLY FUCK its so sharp and easy to use.
I've always used a decades old swivel peeler and I can't believer how easy it is to peel fruits and vegetables now. Like peeling several pounds of potatoes for pomme purée took all of 2 minutes max with almost no waste. Best five bux I ever spent.

I got 3 cookbooks
>Bernard Clayton's New Complete Book of Breads
>Cooks Illustrated Recipes
>Cooks Illustrated Meat Book

I thumbed through the cooks illustrated recipe book and it seems to have a lot of decent recipes. The illustrations leave a lot to be desired. The meat book looks okay it has more illustrations and pictures but a lot of it is pretty basic stuff. I haven't really looked at the bread book I've been kinda busy lately.

OP here, I know right? Few people can understand the true joy of peaceably prepping a salad with a new peeler thinly shaving carrots and skinning carrots. Its so much fun and relaxing to do now, compared to the chore it was before. Its also satisfying to see the ultra-close shavings when I'm done. I should have gotten one of these Y-style peelers a long time ago. I picked mine (a Kuhn Rikon) from the recommendations here:
https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-vegetable-peeler/

Also picked up a bag of this after hearing /ck/ shill for it off-an-on all year and honestly a tsp added into my holiday cooking really does deliver on the savory flavor promised. I'm pleasantly surprised pure MSG isn't just a meme like some other things /ck/ has suckered me into in the past.

Nice. I keep an e-book copy of latest edition of the America's Test Kitchen Cookbook also by CI and I can vouch for the recipes being legit.
>Bernard Clayton's New Complete Book of Breads
Looks neat. I have "The Bread Baker's Apprentice" by Peter Reinhart and I recommend it for understanding baker ratios and the bread making process from mixing, both proofing steps, shaping, etc.

A nakiri made of blue super.
I have only used western chief knives and some global knives when it comes to expensive knives and this nakiri blows them away when it comes to cutting.
It's the small things like the near straight left side and slightly angled right side all the way down makes all food fall off while cutting and never sticks the the blade.
Only problem is that it's the first carbon steel knife I got so I'm figuring out if it's got rust or a patina but I think I'm just gonna get a rust eraser.

Blue super steel is a carbon steel better than blue 1 and 2 because it's less prone to chipping and can be hardened to 65 HRC.
It's also suggested to sharpen at a 10-5 degree angle because the steel can take it if you just cut soft food.
Main downside is I cut onions and tomatoes every day and it rusts if I don't wipe it off after each vegetable.

The peeler that op got is incredibly sharp and is essentially designed to be disposable when the blade dulls. No reason to spend more that 5 bucks on a peeler unless you have a way to sharpen it.

I got a fuzzy logic rice cooker made in glorious nippon. I'm blown away by how well it cooks rice. Everything I have tried so far comes out with perfectly separated grains and an amazing texture with just the right amount of tooth and no mushyness. I would recommend one to anyone that really likes rice, it's worth every penny.

Not that hard. There is an exposed edge that you can run on a stone. I've done it. Juilienning units are all but impossible to sharpen however. You'd need to use a jewelers file or something and then strop it.

Got a Ninja Foodi. It’s a air fryer/pressure cooker/dehydrator all-in-one. It has two lids and it’s fucking cumbersome. There’s one lid for pressure cooking that’s completely separate from the unit and the air frying lid that’s always attached. It has a fan in it so I get why it’s always connected but man it’s so large and in the way when you are using the thing as a pressure cooker.
Other than that it’s great. Made a 5 pound chicken and a whole bunch of french fries so far.

I get that if you're working in a professional kitchen and peeling stuff constantly, but in a home kitchen, how fast are the blades going to dull? The oxo is also only $13 and looks way more comfortable and they sell individual replacement blades.

i could get a stainless steel framed WMF peeler for 5 bucks on amazon aswell
it's not about money for me tho
i dont like things build to be exposable, also given i think it would take a long time to dull a peeler down to the point one would have to throw it out. id resharpen the 5 bucks one aswell as id resharpen an expensive fancy one

i might look into those now, knowing it's possible to resharpen

>> No.13435366

>>13435221
Personally I like the small handle and find it comfortable and more easy to manipulate, but if you like the oxo one more than more power to you. It's nice that they sell replacement blades for it, that makes it a much better value proposition.

The roundup review I referenced in >>13434194 found the OXO Y-Peeler to be a little on the heavy-side for comfy grab-and-go usage in their testing. On the other hand, they did recommend OXO version for a swivel-peeler.

DO IT. Long-term testing above has it keeping its edge after 6 months of testing. Even using a pairing knife hasn't given me the speed and control this peeler has. The only thing is the model I got has a carbon steel blade that it'll rust to shit if you don't treat it like a shaving razor and tea towel it dry after each use session. Even then, its only 4-5$

Mine is this one it's great especially if you can deal with the rust otherwise maybe get a vg10 steel.
I highly recommend it for what I do at least.
Pic relate it needs a bicarb soda with a tiny bit water paste and a paper towel and it scrubs off in 10 seconds.
