Japanese curry is definitely the most familiar to an american / western palate and I'd consider it the perfect "gateway drug" into curry.
There are better curries (more intensely flavorful, more complex, richer, textural), but they are often very different and can be almost assaulting to a western mouth. Japanese curry is just sweet and gentle enough, stewlike, to be enjoyed by anyone.
It was my curry gateway drug. And even though I love complex beautiful curries now, I still also love an instant block of japanese curry.

it's certainly true that there are indian curries which are more palatable than others to westerners, and no, i wouldn't describe curry as "shocking." it's just a very different taste profile in terms of spices and such to what a westerner would be used to. if you're exposed to a lot of curry throughout your life (many brits are) then of course this barely applies.
i never had any curry until i was in my teens, and i was not a fan of the indian and thai curries i tried at that point. when i was 19 a friend invited me over and made a japanese curry dish with beef, and of course i ate it to be polite despite disliking curry. well, first bite i thought, "hey, not so bad." second bite, "this is good." third bite, "this is the best thing i've ever eaten." and suddenly every single curry i have tried since then, including many that i'd tried before and disliked, were all delicious.
it was like a switch flipped in my brain.

Worked in Japan in early 00s as a teacher. Often went to curry places for a quick lunch. The shit you get in blocks is like comparing packaged ramen to a proper noodle shop.

Fast-food restaurant curry has a nice spicy bite with sweet hints of apple. You often see diners adding picked ginger for kick and egg yolk/whole egg for glossyness. It's delicious, cheap, and satisfying.

You can jazz up the home version too, with your own spices, sauted garlic and ginger, etc. It's a base ingredient, like packaged Jap or Korean ramen. Make it your own.

It's also good for kids' palates. Good way to get them to eat veggies.

Curry is easy to find anywhere, but does anyone know where to find goods like aka miso paste and gochujang/doenjang for reasonable prices? I thought it was expensive when I bought 2kg/4.4lb of miso from Amazon for $13 around 1.5 months ago, but it went up $2 and is sitting around there. After seeing this thread I decided to get one of these boxes of Golden Curry while I was at the store. I just cut up a potato, carrot, and onion and added it to the curry after sauteeing them for a while. no what you're saying is you would have to baby it and use it for nothing except take it from the rack, to the cutting board, to the stone (which is a likely spot to chip it if you dont do exactly what you're supposed to) and then back to your rack. normal use would be using it for whatever, on whatever (food related) and putting it in a drawer. no, just because the standard of normal you want to project onto the strangers in this thread, implying that normal for you is some super chef routine that everyone else is stupid for not doing, does not make what your saying normal use is, normal.

idk why your knife cannot be delicate, which is what the makers would call it, and good. and just because normal kitchen knifes you would see around a typical north american house are not actually some hobbiest level knife does not make them worse at cutting (spoiler) regular shit you would find in a typical kitchen (you know, not hobbiest level shit you bought in downtown LA or Vancouver to use your stupid knife on)
