Currently having pic related.
Really amazingly well rounded taste, even though the honey makes it a bit too sweet for my taste.
8 percent but completely smooth and even refreshing.

What are you having?

Drinking a cascadian black ale from a local place that does a lot of smoked and aged stuff. Its pretty much a hoppy stout and it rules. Hammerheart brewing in minnesota. Good stuff

Brewing question:
TL;DR what is pic-related (at the top of my brew batch) and is my beer ruined?

Currently have a Russian Imperial Stout in a glass secondary. SG was about 1.076, I think it was around 1.030-1.035 or so when I moved it to secondary (iirc around 5.5% abv), and FG is supposed to be 1.017-1.020 (about 8%).
It's been on secondary for a couple of weeks and the bubbler stopped bubbling, so I'm assuming it's done and will bottle in a week or two.

BUT! I peeked under the blanket that I use to block out light, and saw pic-related floating at the top of the brew. Wtf is that? Is my beer contaminated? Is there anything I can do? Will waiting longer to bottle it make it worse?

>>13339655
Pic isn't great because it's hard to get a shot through the carboy, but it looks like a whitish-yellowish film. Never seen it before. This is the first time I've ever used a secondary, could that be the problem?

Something I have been wondering, what exactly made IPAs the most popular kind for craft beer?
Like, why is everyone not making Lager or Pils?

>> No.13342171

>>13342140
I think ipas offer more variety of flavors and methods of brewing vs pils or a lot of other lagers. The variation in hops and malts and adjuncts making completely new versions of the same style. Milkshake ipas, hazy, juicy, dry, etc.

How do you tell whether buttery notes are due to faults in the brewing process or contamination, or something intended by the brewer? I tried this the other day and it had a buttery and biscuity flavor to it that I really liked.

>> No.13347584

>>13347511
You can't, that's why they're often frown down upon by brewers, even in styles where they're accepted, like Czech style pilsner. The thing that gives the flavour is called Diacetyl and is quite uncontrollable. But I like the taste as well. The biggest Diacetly-bomb I've personally ever had is Holba Pilsner.
