Calling all al/ck/oholics
What's the most versatile, tasteful, and reasonably-priced whisk(e)y that's available in Europe?
Something for sipping that can also be used for cocktails in a pinch

No idea bro I think it’s kinda funny that we take the most basic of bourbons here for granted tho. Eagle rare and buffalo trace is comparatively some pretty good shit but it’s common as gasoline so no one really cares or thinks twice about it here

Bushmills or if you'd prefer a bourbon, Bulleit.

For me, it's Woodford Reserve - the best bourbon (for the price)

another question, I remember an alton brown show about vodka and him saying that the difference between cheap vodka and good vodka was 3 or 4 passes through a pur filter. I think he was just dumbing down the concept in a funny and entertaining way for TV, but curious if anyone's actually tried pouring shitty vodka through a pur filter over and over and then compared to a good vodka. Just throwing it out there.

did it in college but idk if it really made a difference

>> No.13250433

>>13250386
There's no way it's actually that simple. Most of the bottom shelf handles advertise on the plastic bottle how it's 8 or 9 times distilled, yet it still tastes like rubbing alcohol compared to the top, and even most of the middle, shelf stuff.

>> No.13250441

>>13250386
the difference is mainly branding. also some expensive vodkas are deliberately not the purest possible (absolut). there is nothing intrinsically superior about a pure (i.e. flavorless) vodka either way
>pur filter
never heard of it, but activated charcoal will certainly do it. it's cheap and easy to make a filter with a piece of cloth (or whatever) and an empty two liter plastic bottle, if you want to try it

any variant of Macallan 12!!!!

>loved by many
>hated by no one
>complex enough to drink alone
>cheap enough to not be a waste to put in cocktails

very accessible flavor. it tastes like fruit, nuts, oak and vanilla. no peat or smoke

Honestly I'd go with pinnacle vodka. Decent mixability, and at $10 a fifth you can't go wrong.

To be COMPLETELY honest? Glenfiddich 12. Decent and plain. Come at me.

Evan Williams is a good bottom shelf American Whiskey similar to Jack Daniels. Good for mixing with things like coca cola or ginger ale.

For a nicer bourbon you could probably get where you are I like Maker's Mark. Good on ice or neat and plays well in cocktails like a Manhattan

If you're just trying to get into Whiskey in general and you want something you think you'll like, Red Breast is a good choice. Its an Irish Whiskey but insanely drinkable. Good entry point for a novice

I’d go with the 1L bottles of Jack Daniels as the hands-down winner from that list. Very versatile and affordable. If you need to meme it up with Scotch (you shouldn’t) then go with Glenlivet or that 10yo Highland Park. Glenfiddich is overrated and only pumped up in price by the Chinese demand for it

>> No.13253124

Evan Williams black label is good for the price. I drink it on the rocks, even. But it's cheap enough to justify mixing with.

I'll buy maker's mark or Eagle Rare if I'm splurging.

I was checking my mail order place's prices the other day and I was surprised to find they haven't gone up yet since the scotch tariff hit. I guess stores are still selling the stock they bought before the tariff hit.

On mythbusters they had a pro vodka taster who was able to accurately order the number of passes cheap vodka went through a filter. So yeah it changes the taste but I never could tell well enough to justify the effort

It can make some shit vodkas much better.
Not all cheap vodkas are cutting their costs by insufficiently filtering. So not every vodka gains a lot of benefit.
It won't make a bottom shelf vodka into a top shelf one. It also won't improve a top shelf vodka.
But if your goal is a neutral tasting spirit for mixers, then you can save a tonne of money.
IMO Green Mark and Stolichnaya improve a lot.
