Would Ardbeg Uigeadail or Corryvreckan make for a good Christmas present?
Or are there some better whisky in the same price range?

Uigedail is king of the 50-60 dollar bracket, but they have to like Islay. Most people prefer highlands and speysides

At the price bracket "better" is utterly subjective. These whiskies are not objectively better than cheaper whiskies, they simply offer different experiences that are a little rarer. You really need to think carefully about what type of whisky the recipient prefers.

What's this I heard about these threads not being allowed anymore? Anyone know when this came into effect?

Threads about appreciating alcohol are allowed. Circle jerks about being addicted to alcohol are not. This is over a year old now, and has improved the board slightly.

If they like heavy smoke scotches. If not, then no.

HP is not smokey. Ardbeg might not be a good choice. Use the malt map as your guide.

Highland Park *is* smokey, especially for a non-Islay.

Isn’t lagavalyn 16 better

The removal of al/ck/ was great for the board, or at least these threads in particular. I think they might be starting to infest /fit/ now, though. For some reason they can't just fuck off to /r9k/ or /trash/ where they belong.

This. You should only buy Scotch for your boss when you're ass kissing for promotion.

Try the A'bunadh, instead.

I've tried both and really hated them. Same with basic Ardbeg. I brought the bottle of the basic stuff to work and people commented that they thought something was wrong with it -- and then the guy who recommended it to me visited my workplace, and tried it, and said that that was how it was supposed to taste.

I would recommend almost anything else, seriously. Edradour's SFTC series have all been great, of the ones I've tried. Laphroaig. Even humble Glenlivet has a pleasant rich flavor, even if it's kind of basic.

I have both. Personally I think they are great - especially given the price. Non chill filtered and bottled at high strength are both bonuses too.

Giving it as a gift, it would help if they like Islay whisky. However, the Uigeadail is a nice mix of sweet and rich, followed by big smoky flavours. Id give it as a gift to any whisky drinker.

Yeah, in the same way a jalapeno is "spicy" just like a ghost pepper. If Op's friend only has HP to use as a point of reference for smoke, then they'll be in for a (possibly unpleasant) surprise when they taste Ardbeg or Laphroaig.

Also would recommend the Oogie over Corry. Corryvreckan is very harsh (in a good way) but it wont be appreciated by most people.

Ugi or lagavalyn 16 is what I’m considering now
