I don't know why you'd buy either when you can just get a brand new 'used' mixer from susan after she convinced her husband using the same logic as in the op post
thats what I did for my mixer, I think I got it for like 70 cad and its same model still being sold for 200+ usd nearly a decade later

mind you, it doesn't have 20-30 gimmicky optional attachments
I bet she replaced it with a kitchenaid so she could make her own flour

I got one for making pizza dough. It would overheat and turn off half way through spinning. Very loud, reminded me of the "ice cream maker" things with the rock salt and ice water, just loud as fuck and half way works.

The extra attachments are ridiculous. Who at home would regularly make fresh pasta or make foods requiring freshly ground meat? I can see it being a decent peeler and shredder, but you can easily use a normal peeler and grater.

I have a vintage Hobart K5 from the 60's or 70's passed down from my grandma. Way better than the low end tilthead modern ones but probably worse than the professional line (it only has a 300W motor). Can definitely hear it struggle with large batches of dough but powers through everything else and I consider the drivetrain fairly bulletproof.

The great model is still made, it's just harder to find because they keep renaming it.
What you're looking for is the models with lift bowls instead of the top that folds up, and DC motors instead of AC... usually they are indicated with shiny silver knobs instead of black but this goes out the window with the pretty color artisan models.

fresh pasta is great and once you get it down its pretty quick. I make a lot of ravioli and pierogi and such. Just because you dont like making things from scratch doesnt mean other people dont.

I don't like mine because the minimum volume before it can mix effectively is a bit higher than I normally need. Hand mixers are better for me. It also starts physically rocking if I try to knead dough with it.

You don't need a pasta maker for filled pastas. You just need a rolling pin and a knife to cut it into rectangles. It's just as easy. Pasta makers are for shapes that are too fiddly too do by hand.

>> No.13173069

If you're actual good at cooking then you'll have a lot of excuses to use one but if you spend your time only making processed meals from boxes and cans then it will collect dust. It's good for people who make things from scratch. I use it for mashed potatoes, pizza and bread dough, emulsion sauces, and all kinds of batters. Probably use it 3-4 times a week. They aren't shit btw. Mine was given to me by my grandmother. It's like 30-40 years old now and it's never broken down

You should check that shear gears are available for your model if it's that old. You may want to stock up on a few while you can. They're designed to break to save the rest of the system from excess stress, so are likely to be the first failure you experience.

I didn't even know half of those attachments existed. Some look neat like the vegetable sheet cutter and spiralizer. The ice cream and heating bowl could be fun attachments. I can't imagine the juicers being better than a standalone one. The grain grinder is where it lost me. I know there are people out there who really would do it but it still seems extravagant.

Have you ever had true fresh pasta? Absolutely worth the work. And as far as the meat grinder goes, I hunt and grind my own venison. Plus when I make burgers, meatballs, or meatloaf I always use combinations of meat that I grind together. Usually with fat and trimmings from when I dry age steaks. To each their own though. Its definitely overkill for some people.

i'm pretty sure you need to break most of them down into little parts just to dry them so they don't rust
but that goes for all sorts of meat grinders, not just electric attachments. The crank ones I have are a real bitch, only industrial ones are designed worth a damn, they have blades that can be taken out individually

specialty flours are a good use case for it
grinding your own grain isn't the worst thing, if you stick to doing it
don't need to wash the attachment each time you use it as long as you're not doing a greasy nut flour or something
personally I don't have much desire to do it, but if happen to go through a lot of corn meal, it becomes a real option
dried corn whether meant for animal feed or simply popcorn is cheaper than corn flour by weight
a 50lb bag is like 40 bucks

The belts and gears will break on that cheap Chinese piece of crap before you can even mix a loaf of bread.

One advantage with the older machines is that the gears have been rubbing against each other for years,
The rubbing polishes the gear surfaces, and causes the gears to mate better, lowering friction
And making the older mixers smoother and quieter.
And increasing the drive efficiency.
Technically, you could puchase a new mixer and use lapping compound to lap the gears together, but it would be a pain to do.

Manufacters usually have a set “suggested retail” price.
Stores then discount from the “suggested retail” price so it looks like the customer is gettinf a discount on the item.
Most major chains are pretty similar in price nowadays, but the stores want to show a discount of the fake “normal retail” price.
If the manufacturer sells the item at the regular street price on their website, it undermines the “suggested retail” price.
Basically, manufacturers websites should only be used to purchase accessories and attachments stores don’t want to bother stocking.
