It doesn't ruin it but it gives for a different texture and taste. You can use canned sauce that already has shredded basil in it but it wont taste the same as if you had basil leafs spread on the pizza, also you can shred and cover the whole thing in cheese but then you wont be able to savor just the saucy bites or anything. Like the anon you replied to said it makes for a different taste in each bite and imo it isn't objectively better it's just different and for me I eat different pizza based on what I'm in the mood for not on what's objectively better in this or that way if it even is better.
