Industry thread. Share stories or vent about how shit your job is.

Worked in industry for 11 years, worked as assistant kitchen manager and supervisor for 4 years. I cared a lot, got told I cared too much, fought with lazy and incompetent chefs, sous chefs, cooks and owners. Settled into a corporate chain place after getting burnt out in high end places. Same stupidity. But everyone liked me there and my cooking skills/ability to improvise netted me excellent okay and respect. Will be graduating in April from college after stopping for 8 years as a medical lab assistant and then working my way up to cytology. Starting pay will be $7 more than my cooking job, so it's worth it to me.

I still cook for family and myself, occasionally for others because I want to do something nice for them, but restaurant work isn't good. Long hours, often cheap pay to start, and the wrong managers or chefs always lead to things going south quickly. It's easy work to get into, but it's hard work to maintain without great self control and willingness to walk away before saying or doing something stupid to people.
