Hi, I am Mexican.
Every single tequila out there in the market is good as long as it is 100% agave. "Cheap" tequila is usually not 100% agave and it's more like a 49%/51% blend of agave and sugar cane. Those are poor quality, meant for mixing and not to be taken alone.
Jose Cuervo is one of the big four tequila houses en México and it's pretty good but that doesn't make every product on their line good.
For example, Jose Cuervo Especial es not 100% agave. It's good for mixing (for some people) and it's cheap as fuck. Jose Cuervo Tradicional in the other hand its a pretty good, not to expensive standard of how a good tequila should be and it's good alone if you have the palate.
I can continue ranting about this shit if someone is interested tho.

Since I don't know about prices in your country I am just gonna say that my favorite tequila is Don Julio 70. It's around $600 mxn a bottle here so I guess around $40 in the US. Don Julio Blanco is a little bit more affordable and it's still is a 9/10 for me.

Cuervo absolutely did used to be fake shit. It was tequila flavored spirits with only some tequila, was skunky tasting and tainted anything it mixed in.
At some point, they suffered pain financially, and had to start making a 100% agave, then a blue agave disclaimer right on the label. The stereotype was entrenched.

Anyone who does know shit about tequila knows that it is NOW a designation based upon growing region and being all agave all the time, no blended bullshit and fake flavors anymore.

Bam, people starting liking tequila again, and for more than just shots, and even aged stuff was available for export, giving it some clout to spend money on it beyond being cheap alcohol, which it is. Then, someone realized if it's 100% it's pretty much assured to be delicious, and if it was reposado, assured to be smooth and not sharp. So that opened the door for 1000 new manufacturers to label and sell. Competition breeds innovation to get your bottle noticed. Make a cactus come up the middle (something that used to be done for small blends of grappa), but hey mexicans are known glass blowers and labor is cheap. ALL white TEQUILA is pretty good and brand pricing is based on advertising costs and created demand. Some reposados are better than others. Anejo, sorry, I'd rather have any other aged spirit first unless it's for food pairing.

Vodka sells in skulls. Ohh, day of the dead tie-in, a holiday that has only turned into a halloween-like festival to have something for tourists to come see. Why not tie in morbid shit with tequila with funky labels? Because people bring gifts to hosts, and bring tequila to parties. LOL gun, why not? LOL funky bottle? Who cares dudes. It's nearly the same inside. People laugh with their friends.
