Anyone remember old Taco Bell? Apperently olives on Mexican food used to be a thing.

My parents like olives on their enchiladas. It must be a boomer thing

It's was and still is a sort of tex mex thing. A good ingredient on nachos of course.

I like that old aesthetic. It was before my time but still makes me nostalgic.

I have been working this summer in oroville california and they still have mexican places here that are old school af.
Ground beef in everything , olives and sour cream garnish .
Pretty fucking cool , its like the 80s never ended here

When I was a kid that was the only kind of Mexican food I'd ever tried. As a result I thought Mexican food sucked. Thought the same about Chinese because all we had near us was a couple awful take out places.

But now that you are older, go back a revisit one of the better ones if you can find one.
I was surprised at how much i enjoyed the old school flavors.
I fully agree that real mexican is way better, but its neat to go back.

The taco """pies""" a lot of grocery stores around here carry (really a plastic plate of something vaguely resembling beans + sour cream topped with a whole lot of shredded cheese) have sliced black olives on them. Pretty nasty and full of lactose apparently because it gave me wicked diarrhea

Original Enchirito used to have a corn tortilla.. Let that sink in. We will never experience the glory days.

I don't get that vibe with Mexican or Chinese, but definitely do with Italian. Even though I've been to Italy several times and fucking love real Italian food at least once a year or so I hit up an old school Italian American place where they still give a shit and revel in the flavors of my childhood. Thankfully I live in a place where there are still a bunch of them. Of all the cuisines that got Americanized during the late 19th and 20th Centuries I think Italian held up the best.

I am one of those people that actually believes we make better pizza.
I had a hard time even finding pizza in italy and it was not great when I did. When I get """authentic""" italian pizza here in the states I pretty much think that sucks too.

>I am one of those people that actually believes we make better pizza.
I'm in the opposite camp. I think we rule on baked pasta dishes and red sauce, but am not so much a fan of American pizza, especially as represented by the big chains. I don't need pizza to be the answer to: "What can I eat when I feel like I need something more overkill than a double cheeseburger?" I like pizza being a simple snack that takes the place of a meal when I'm having a glass of wine. For me quantity over quality destroys pizza, as does stupid topping choices like pepperoni, chicken, ranch dressing and BBQ sauce.

We have opposite tastes. I am not impressed by the simple italian pizza at all. I love american pizza with lots or red sauce and tons of toppings.
I do t mind some things being simple but i have to have a nice crust that is chewy and not crunchy like a cracker.
What i liked in italy were the soups
Holy fuck the soups

I gag anytime I even see olives. you ain't right if you're eating those things.

I am so sorry son, thats my fault.
When you were a little boy i would make you close your eyes and put olives in your mouth.
Remember that game.
But those werent olives son... that was my penus.
I wish i could take it back.
Now that you know, you should go out and try some olives, they dont taste anything like you remember.

Taco Casa is still around in Texas and they fit that aesthetic and offer an enchilada just like that complete with olives on top and all.

For me in Italy it was the vegetable dishes and the seafood pastas. Would not recommend eating beef there ever. But whatever veg is in season and a simple pasta they will kill with. But while we disagree on pizza - to me greasy and overloaded is a deal breaker - I think we will agree on sandwiches. Yeah, the Italian porchetta is a strong contender we win hands down on the classic Italian American subs/hoagies/grinders/heroes if you get them from a good place.

I would have sworn that was Taco Casa had I not looked at the drink cup. They put black olives on lots of their stuff and the color scheme is nearly the exact same.
