>I just looooove broccoli

I'm a server at a restaurant that sells cheesy broccoli as a side dish. I have noticed that an odd amount of people comment how much they enjoy broccoli and then proceed to leave on their plate every piece that wasn't slathered in cheese. Why does this happen? I'm just curious about the psychology behind announcing enjoyment of something when it is obvious that the person is lying.

I am autistic btw if that matters. My father owns the establishment. It would be very much appreciated if the healthnut vs fatty stuff could be kept to a minimum and the tip talk abstained from completely. Please just serious conversation attempting to give me some insight. Thank you.

It's in case their mothers have the place bugged. If you announce enjoyment of broccoli, your mother will think you have finished it even if you don't.

I liked steamed broccoli, I rarely eat it with cheese. It's good alongside a steak.
I'm not one of those maniacs who can eat raw broccoli though.

when food arrives, people feel obligated to make some comment. if you're with company and food arrives, it's weird to just accept it silently. you say thanks to the waiter, you say wow this looks delicious or finally, i'm starving. these all add something intangible to how pleasant your dining experience is. not a lot of thought gets put into these verbalizations. no one blinks an eye or thinks about how people are lying to themselves, because it's a lie without consequences.

It's nothing but a health flex.
People want to come off as healthier, smarter, and better than we are.
If you're eating a sauce-slathered chicken dish with potatoes and cheesy baked broccoli, you know you're eating trash. Announcing your affinity for the only green thing on the plate kind of socially amplifies the effect of eating it, even if you don't.

tl;dr normies are dumb and self-conscious even when they claim they aren't and use dining out as validation for their social status.

Why even bother asking

The world will always seem strange to you and locked behind a layer of emotion you won't be able to understand.

Autistic people have more emotion than neurotypicals. They appear emotionally stunted because they learn in childhood that their intense emotional responses are punished, so come to repress them. It is the theatrics they don't understand, not the feelings.

in a way, yes. i don't like it, but if you obsess over this behavior you're overthinking it. i just continue the conversation i'm having at the table

is being an absolutist working out for you?

Doesn’t raw broccoli contain chemicals that kill susceptible people?

The fluid production of semi-conscious, contextual NPC dialog isn't really intended to effectuate any kind of meaningful information exchange. What you're really communicating - based on your inflection, body and facial language, quickness, wittiness - is your emotional state as it relates to the social situation. If you do it well you communicate "I'm comfortable, happy, and confident; I'm having a good time and so should you; I'm not intimidated or made uncomfortable by you, which demonstrates that I'm not your social inferior and thus you don't have to feel awkward and irritated that you're wasting your time and embarrassing yourself by consorting with someone below your station"

so you're saying i can appear normal if i just say "i'm comfortable, happy, and confident; i'm having a good time and so should you; i'm not intimidated or made uncomfortable by you, which demonstrates that i'm not your social inferior and thus you don't have to feel awkward and irritated that you're wasting your time and embarrassing yourself by consorting with someone below your station" every time i see someone? totally based, thanks for life shortcut. i might just wear it on a t-shirt so i don't have to remember all that.

This pisses me off and reminds me of those retarded Kraft cheese commercials. The ones were kids are being little shits about eating vegetable until their parents melt cheese over it. That's not teaching kids to eat vegetables its teaching them to slather healthy stuff with shit until its intrinsic health benefits become nonexistent.

Well I mean you're still getting all the nutrients from it even if you do douse it with shitty cheese, it's just that it's retarded to do that if you're trying to lose weight by eating more veggies and avoiding high calorie garbage.
