>be a Brit in America (New York upstate)
>Wednesday night
>go for a few beers with my new workmates
>have to take an Uber to some random bar on a main road that looks like a tin shed
>have decent sesh, and a bit of a laugh with them
>barman starts looking concerned when I go up to the bar after only three (3) pints, mentions how I've been at the bar quite a bit this hour (???)
>have a giggle with him, buy three more pints there and sink each one in front of him
>his face screws up like he's sucked a lemon
>have 15 pints total across the night, absolutely mugging him off each time
>stop tipping after a while, he's literally pouring a beer
>he looks at the Yanks I'm with like I need an ambulance or something when I wasn't particularly tipsy

What the fuck lel, what is this awful drinking culture?

Not sure about New York, but they're supposed to cut you off after you're drunk as they're legally responsible for the shit you cause there as they enabled you. Not even joking. If you want to get that shit-faced they want you to go home before causing a scene.

One of my friends dated a Brit for a few years before the school visa ended and he had to move back to the UK. That jagoff was the biggest alcoholic I've ever ever seen in my life. Emma would gush about how he could finish a pony keg and be completely fine. Yet, we go out on the weekends and I would watch Timothy spend at least $60 or more dollars on himself to get shit faced all before ten o'clock. Watched the chuckle-fuck piss himself in a gas station as he was that damn drunk.

NY fag here. I think its just my state that holds the bartender responsible if some boozehound has 1 too many and causes some shit.
Which is retarded.
The onus of responsibility shouldn't fall on the fucking bartender.

He stood watch one night and saw sailors half crawling on the ground shitting themselves back to the ship. One word: ouzo.

There are some very good Irish pubs in London. Not fake Irish ones with Guinness hats and shamrocks everywhere, just pubs that are frequented by the Irish community in London. They're extremely welcoming, but be prepared to have a bit of craic with the locals.

You're wrong. Brit pub culture is max comfy and they have something beautiful rarely found in the US - cask conditioned hand pulled ales, which are ubiquitous.

Cask conditioned where they have to pump the tap handle to get it to flow into the glass? Even brewpubs in the US use CO2 to carbonate the kegs and the tap handle isn't pumped it's just pulled once to allow the beer to flow out. Are you sure you know what cask conditioned and handpulled taps are? I suspect not. This might help.

>Real ale is the name coined by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) in 1973 for a type of beer defined as "beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide".[2][3] The heart of the definition is the maturation requirements. If the beer is unfiltered, unpasteurised and still active on the yeast, it is a real ale; it is irrelevant whether the container is a cask or a bottle.

>Cask ale in pubs is usually served with a beer engine or handpump, which is used to siphon the beer from the cellar. The beer engine is a 0.5 imp pt (0.28 l), sometimes 0.25 imp pt (0.14 l), airtight piston chamber; pulling down on the handle raises the piston which drags up a half pint of beer. When a cask is first tapped into the beer engine, or after the lines have been washed through, the pump needs to be pulled several times to clear the lines of air or water. The line will continue to hold beer, which will tend to go stale overnight, so the first beer of the day pulled through will be thrown away. Most pubs will pull through at least a pint of beer on each beer engine before they open, while others will wait for the first order of beer on that pump. Experienced bar staff will serve a pint with long, smooth, slow pulls of the pump handle, plus a short final pull to make sure the glass is full.

Really? I spent a few weeks in england, ireland and scotland a couple years ago and they seemed like they had a variety of age groups. Granted I didn't spend much time in london, but in smaller towns and cities I thought they were pretty nice. Some of them had decors like you would picture an old victorian mansion might have had. I just thought they were unique and friendly compared to american bars. Sure you have to be able to take some good natured banter, but I liked them.

Dude I fucking wish we had comfy bars like that in the states. Every modern bar now tries to be rustic or some dumb shit. It's horrible. I did find one decent bar recently that looks like it hasn't been touche since the early 70's. Brown carpet. Everything is dark stained wood. The lights are those hanging stained glass kind of lights and they still had a tube television. It was boomer heaven

They are still around but they are dying off. Breweries buy out the pub, charge increasingly more rent and the pubs can't break even and so they shut them down and sell the land for housing.
