Is there a best wine? I always thought it was about preferences and food pairings.

There's bad wines, literally spoiled. Best? Nah. In fact, I've always theorized prices are more about people sticking to things they knew they once tried and happened to like, and then maintained brand loyalty making it a best seller in restaurants...over the space of about 5 years, at which point, you do like something else through the trial error process and you'd go either way. People like what they like.
Santa margherita is a mid tier flavor [pinot grigio, but look at the popularity since the day it launched? It's a restaurant staple. Do you adore it and think it's awesome? Then you just like what you already know.
The rest of the market is fantastic palates and real wine fans with a lot of experience and/or training, or people buying for the novelty of the label and the buzz and the food pairing. Wine and alcohol in general absolutely adds to the food experience.

Rose, had a bad reputation as being for the uneducated or the palate that couldn't be arsed one way or another to want white or red with their meal and they're not opening 2 bottles, so a bit of cheapness involved. This connotation changed the market quite a bit, and in fact, rose did become a sweeter product and get marketed to the low end consumption if a winery still even made it at all.
Of course, there was never anything wrong with rose in the first place.
So, it's changing and getting what it deserves again in respect as a few really excellent examples are in the marketplace now. Try not to be too rigid when you try things or judge things. Throughout this death of rose and rebirth of rose trend, I've been faithful to honestly like the most vile of categories, and would buy pink champagne to pair with celebrations like a great slice of cake. I've watched it go from $10/bottle back up to $55 for a nice brut. Ouch.
