That's how most of them seem to be. The one I used to live at had openly visible loss prevention guys in uniforms following people around, everything small and of value was locked behind a case, especially the ethnic hair-care products and shaving equipment, and it just feels filthy and unclean.

Walmart uses that footage to study shopping behaviors and patterns. Awhile back they were shopping around for, and probably have it by now, facial recognition tech so they could profile customers who can't be easily tracked (eg. pay with cash instead of cards)

I got a decent price on a flat screen from Sams but everything else was a let down. Less variety than other big store, if you find something you want you can get a lot of it, but probably not the brand you want. The grocery section wasn't any better or cheaper than other places. And I don't need sams club clothes.

Fuck that place. I had a manager there who was a complete cuntbag who was obsessed with metrics. He never really staffed the store, and one night left me to face twice three sections (almost half) of the fucking store. I just hung up my apron and walked out at about 9 PM that evening and turned my phone off. Next day I had sixteen phone calls of him screaming at me about how I cost him his bonus and how he was affected by that. Fucking scumbag.

OP, I live in Florida. I did my jury duty in a jury pool for a shoplifting trial, where some guy was accused of x number of dollars of theft from Walmart (exactly the dollar amount to make the state prosecutors foot the bill to try the case). They do nail everyone, all 100%, of anyone who steals. They have cameras covering every inch of every surface and walkaround guards. There are business articles about their practices for decades. They kinda have to do that, ya know? People are just going to steal them out of business if not. They want to deter you. It's entirely an uncomfortable feeling when someone asks you if you want help and you're thinking that you don't even look like you need help.

Don't schlum it or act suspicious. I suggest a metal cart, not a basket. Their cameras can see you toss items down to the bottom of a metal cart far away from your body when you place items in the big cart.

I suggest also that every store has the same element of uncomfortableness especially if you dare to use self-checkout. It's dumb. It costs jobs. It lets them have less employees, less training, less skilled people and exponentially degrades the shopping experience. Stop falling for the "faster" mentality of self-checkout. I can see you already know they aren't the cheapest at everything.

Know what is faster? Use the new Walmart grocery app. Order your groceries, set your pickup time, click the app, drive there and let them put it into your truck. Problem solved. If you get the same things all the time, that milk, eggs, bread, bananas, etc. shopping list is reusable next week. I don't shop the same place all the time, and I kind of hate that Walmart is a 2 mile walk to circle the food area just once, so I really only go there if I need some huge shampoo refill or big bottle of $1 vitamins while I'm here.
