For me, a cheesemaker, I find the diversity and quality of Italian cheeses to be top notch, but the consistency and scale of Danish manufacturers to be par excellence.

Then next is France and after them Spain.

Honorable mention tier is Holland and Switzerland

>> No.12624377

Lots of them. When I was a kid my dad worked in Wisconsin a lot and would bring us back different types of cheddar. That stuff was so good that you could eat it by itself and be satisfied.

I also have a small Amish town nearby and they make goat's milk cheese that is so good that you'll be constipated for a month. I always buy at least 2 or 3 blocks when I'm out that way.

>> No.12624378

A couple of Wisconsin manufacturers make really decent clones at spectacular scales. Wisconsin has an underappreciated small family owned creamery tradition as well.

I'm English so I love cheddar and red Leicester, but the French do make a damn good cheese.

1. There are different types of American cheese. Most (especially what you'll find outside the U.S. that's labelled as American Cheese) are those single slices that you're thinking of. They're just some disgusting flavored vegetable oil product. However, in the US there are some better types that are actually just blends of different cheeses to give it a standardized taste/texture.

2. You realize we actually make real cheese here too, right? Probably more variety than any other country. Obviously we can't make cheeses specific to countries, but we do make those styles over here. They're obviously going to be different because they're not aged in the same environment. But the point still stands. We have the largest variety of food of any country in the entire world. If you name it, it can probably be found in almost any major city in the USA.

You legally can't sell unpasteurised cheese in the US so it's not available and consequently the US cheese culture is a sorry joke. It can be strongly argued that pateurised cheese is fake, like the entirety of americant culture, but that gets the mutts barking like african wild dogs, lol!
