12509758 No.12509758 [Reply] [Original]

Got some guests coming over who are massive weebs apparently, they requested I make them something Japanese, since I said I like cooking Asian cuisine.

Is it at all appropriate to serve rice balls, like pic related, as a side for Japanese Curry?
I kinda wanna make them cause I think they look fun, or should I just stick to plain white rice on the side?

Hahaha OH MY GOD guys do you remember that time when Pokemon called rice balls "donuts" in the English dub??? Me too!! Haha that was so funny and epic. Isn't it just HILARIOUS that the localization team thought that maybe American middle schoolers wouldn't know what the fuck an Onigiri is? Isn't it just fucking MINDBLOWINGLY funny the way they tried to do their jobs in the best way possible? FUCKING HILARIOUS

Most japs would probably find it an odd combination. Kind of like having a sandwich as a side to your steak or something. With that said, if you think the guests will enjoy it I don't see why not.

You have never had sandwiches as a side dish?
Like cucumber sandwiches or grilled cheese?
Why wouldn't a grilled cheese sandwich go well with steak?
Or even more fitting for the analogy, grilled cheese and tomato soup is a common combination.
Please point out to me specifically how that's a "problem". How is that "problematic"?

Kids aren't gonna be turned off from watching an animated series set in a fantasy world because the characters are eating food that's unfamiliar to them. It's a shit job at localization since they're calling it something it's obviously not. I remember reacting at such stuff and finding it retarded even as a kid

I think american children (and adults) might be just retarded and small minded.
No other country feels the need to localize in this way.
Cause in other countries, even children know enough about the world to maybe have a slight idea what a RICE BALL could be.

Tonkatsu is easy as fuck to do. Brown some panko in a skillet with olive oil. Coat pork chops with flour, egg and then the panko. Into the oven it goes. Cook rice and chop a ton of cabbage.
You can fake the sauce with worcester, ketchup, fish sauce and sugar.
Serve rice in individual bowls for your weeb guests to hold. I like caesar on the cabbage. Sprinkle rice with dried seaweed if you have it.

if you're doing curry do those fried shrimp things too. just shrimps cut a certain way breaded in panko and pan fried, you can use a shallow amount of oil.

Katsu curry is a good choice, too. You get that lovely curry sauce without making it a stew (and can still get all your veggies if you grate them in), and you get katsu which is almost always better than the meat in the curry itself.

If they are weebs, another easy thing to serve as a side would be tempura veggies. Just get the veggies, dip in egg, roll in panko, and fry in oil.

This recipe isn't authentic, but the sauce in it is Japanese-style and very tasty. Maybe you could make the cause from it to serve with sides for dipping.

Why not make mini ones as a pre snack before the curry, that way you can make lots of mini ones with less ingredients.

I say this cause Japanese curry goes with rice, why would you eat more rice on the side?
Make some good korean style spicey salad from spring onions or something for the side dish. Heck make pickled cucumber if you want something Japanese specifically.

Onigiri are kinda more of a snack.
I'd suggest serving them as an appetizer and then curry+rice as a second course.
You could also do some simple miso soup before the apps.
