Single-family homes (in non-crime-ridden areas) are cheaper the further away you go from urban centers. Also the 13-mile stat the other poster stated is an exaggeration. There's a grocery store every few miles or so in the suburbs, or at minimum a convenience store.

What is true is that American restaurants in a competitive market upsize portions to stay in business. Also, food is inexpensive and small part of a family's overall budget.

I''m a burger, and that always amazes me, too. I live in a suburb, and we have group mailboxes, about a quarter mile from my house. I literally want to slap a bitch when I see my neighbors drive to the mailboxes instead of just walking. The only people I don't get mad at are my elderly neighbors who have trouble walking anyway. I usually ask them if they want me to pick up their mail for them when I get mine.

Yeah, that's true. I don't like getting a doggy bag, but a lot of restaurants will automatically either bring you one, or wrap it up for you anyway. That's why I like saving my money to go to nice restaurants instead of average ones, because the portion sizes are normal and you're actually able to eat what comes on your plate without feeling like you're going to die.

Unless you're talking about high-speed rail and commercial air travel, public transit only makes sense in dense areas. These things have to run on a schedule, and the longer the distance they run, the more the disruptions in that schedule accrue. Plus, in a tightly packed space, if you miss a train, no worries, another will be along in a few minutes, so you won't be that late. If you miss a bus in a wide area, the next one probably won't be around for a few hours, you might as well cancel whatever it was you were going to do, or if that's not an option, hail a cab and pay out the ass.

The actual problem is zoning laws that prevent communities from forming organically, with housing and small businesses co-located. There's no reason for public transit even if you can just walk/bike to 80% of your destinations.

Some chain restaurants have been pretty consistent in giving people more than they can possibly eat, and it's a strategy. They're mainly aimed at families and they take home a lot of food.
'ethnic-american' places such as indian or chinese probably give out oversized portions with the highest consistency especially for lunch.
Going forward it's projected that the majority of eating out will actually be done at home via delivery. So you can expect size to decrease of course.
