Alcohol noob here. I'm trying to find out what are some good vodka brands that I can buy and try out.
What are the hidden gems that I can try out?
Some mates recommended me Stalinskaya, Absolut vodka and others Finlandia.

Web series called Three Sheets sat down with the owner of Chopin and taste tested types of vodka with the host.
I was impressed.
I think Chopin is indeed very good.

There isn't a whole lot to vodka, it's going to be your desire for triple distillation and very little flavor left in but smooth, or the right kinds of flavors left in based on the origin of the spirits (potatoes or other), either/or is just going to be your preference.
I wouldn't pay a lot of money for vodka. Most people are drinking it for purity and reduced glycemic index and low sugar, ie diet reasons, getting toasted and being a working professional with no time to consume extra calories nor downtime nursing hangovers. You can have a couple of vodka based drinks between workout days with zero ramifications to your overall goals. Delicious? Only if you're doing it extra cold and with the right mixers.

Am russian. You don't get into vodka. You just drink it to get drunk. If you can taste it, it's shit(most of it here in russia is shit, but it's cheap - 3.5 us bux, it outweighs the shittinnes). Though i came to believe that after years of shit we just got used to it and think that's what real vodka tastes kike. But I prefer western slavs vodka: polish, check, even fucking hungarians have good stuff in their supermarkets. It's still cheap and goes down like water. I just distill my own grain spirit, clean it and make my own.

I'm forced to believe that this is the case. While I've never had expensive vodka, I've had top quality liquors, whiskeys, gins etc and all of them have that pungent alcohol aroma, accompanied with a burn. I'm convinced that if you diluted pure ethanol with spring water it would still have that bitter chemical flavor.

Pretty Much every different decent brand of Gin tastes different.
Even many of the cheaper Gins taste different, and the cheaper Gins taste nothing like the expensive Gins.

Vodkas also taste different, with different textures, but a lit of people are less likely to notice.
“Flavored” Vodkas can also be massively different between brands.

Hangar 1 is the smoothest-drinking vodka I've had. It's not the cheapest so I wouldn't use it for party booze but it's my favorite to drink on the rocks or in something simple like a martini. It's made with grapes so it's a tiny but sweet and tastes less like rubbing alcohol than others I've had.

I go with Russian Standard if I want something cheaper that's still smooth.

Vodka is a misunderstood spirit, many people just buy it based on price or advertising.

you have several types of vodkas
craft vodka, which is made from a single batch and generally only filtered once to allow more flavor to come through. Genuinely there aren't many of these.
Sometimes they will be made from beets or other less-common vegetables

High quality vodkas, usually made from wheat or another neutral base, filtered twice or five times

low quality vodka, made from anything, charcoal filtered (which removes all flavor).
these are actually the best general use vodkas for mixing.
Many "top shelf" western vodkas actually fall into this category, westerners actually preferring a "blank vodka"

shit vodka, which is just a low quality vodka which hasn't been filtered enough or was made with very poor starting ingredients.
you can actually improve this vodka considerably by filtering it again yourself with a charcoal water filter.

If you're american you're really getting the same shit with a different label, so don't waste your money.
