You can buy packaged flan mix at any grocery with a latino section. If you've ever had flan in a restaurant, chances are that it was made from raw eggs, and cooked like a custard. The packaged mix is different, a kind of mixture of dairy and gelatin to get the firmness that is foolproof unlike the skill needed to take a custard from thickened to water bath to finish. So, it's easy mode, but just know it's it's like a dairy jello. It has a burnt sugar form of liquid caramel layer on top, as is traditional in flan that is flipped out of a dish. This caramel layer is also set in place via the gelatin vehicle. Flavor will be there, but texture is different. If there are differences in artificial vanilla flavoring or mild vs heavy sweetness per japanese tate differences, well, I couldn't say.
