12405336 No.12405336 [Reply] [Original]

Welcome to the 2019 /ck/ Challenge!

The theme for each round is announced on the 1st Monday after the previous round's end with 2 weeks for submissions (except for this round cause some anons want to make some Easter Sunday shit so we're doing things early!). After that the voting/rating thread goes up for 3 days and everyone is welcome to vote on the submitted dishes.

Submit your dish with a timestamped picture of your creation (ideally with an available step-by-step process via an imgur gallery post or a photoshopped/GIMPed picture) with a unique totem visible in the picture (any type of object be it a dice, glassware, cloth that you'll show with your submissions for the rounds). If you would not like to submit scores then you are free to give feedback/criticism on the challengers dishes as you see fit (just don't fucking clog up the thread with autism please).

The voting will follow modified Iron Chef rules, a 20 point scale where 5 points each will go towards Presentation (how the dish looks on the plate, i.e. the plating), Originality, Appeal (how appetizing the dish looks to you) and fulfilling the Challenge Goals.

You may use this template in order to score the competitors submissions:

Presentation: /5
Originality: /5
Appeal: /5
Challenge Goals: /5
Total: /20

The first elimination round, where the theme was TEA, has come and passed and unfortunately some people did not submit a dish in this elimination round and will not be competing in the next round. As we have 4 challengers now for round 4 only 3 will advance to round 5 on Monday which will become the FINAL ROUND for the /ck/ challenge so please vote for who you think deserves to make it to the final cut!

Now it's time to present the round 4 dishes!

Challenger nrrwmndd presents "Lavender Tea-Smoked Ahi Tuna Carpaccio." This dish uses a mix of infusions using matcha and Lavender tea to contrast with fruity, salty and savoury flavors of the fish, soy sauce and yuzu to make a very daring appetizer. But will it work in his favor?

12405340

Challenger Quaff presents ""Jasmine Tea Smoked Ribs." A sweet and spicy style of smoked ribs that are smoked with some coriander and Shaoxing Wine and braised with hoisin sauce and garnished with shallots and cucumber. Will this mouth-watering combo be enough to please the masses?

12405344

Challenger Sakeanon presents "Stir-fry with Deep Fried Oolong Leaves and Garlic Paired with Laphet Thoke (Burmese Fermented Tea-leaf salad)." This stir fry uses Hand-Cut Green Tea Noodles and a Black Tea-Stained Egg in order to enhance the flavours of different types of tea into a multi-faceted dish. But will this sentiment reflect in the minds of the judges?

>> No.12405346

12405346

And finally challenger Tiki Doomer presents "Sweet and Savoury Scotched Tea Egg." The egg yolk has been replaced with an iced Chai Tea mixed with sweet condensed milk and poached in lavender tea while the pork sausage crust has a bit of matcha in the mix. A very high risk strategy, but will this mix-up work well with the judges?

And those are the round 4 submissions! Since I forgot to do the voting thread yesterday because i was very busy with IRL shit the voting will go until Sunday at midnight CEST. Thanks to the 4 anons who submitted dishes in round 4 and best of luck to those who move onto the final round!

Something about the presentation really works for me. Individually some things don't look great, but as a whole I like the muted feel. Tea throughout, and several things I'd never seen done before. I'd add points for hand rolling noodles if I could, nice touch using the egg shell to hold the sweet soy too.

The egg yolk is remarkable, I would never have guessed just seeing it. It's a huge shame that marbling was covered up and I'm guessing the slicing crushed the final egg. I can imagine the combination working, I'd eat a scotch egg with sweet tea, but the proportions of tea to meat to egg white seem like they would blow the egg completely away.

I don't think anyone is more disappointed than me with the marbling not coming through in the cross section. Yeah, the egg got a little smooshed, but this was actually going to be the test run and I did a really soft cooked egg so that I could get the yolk out, and probably bursted the white when refilling it with the tea. I approach the challenge as a way to just try new things and go out there with whatever idea I came up with - mostly technically - so it's a little dissapointing that OP decided to change the rules to get rid of me. I honestly just like cooking crazy shit for fun. It's too bad that a couple anons decided to troll the competition and picked me to single out. I didn't expect to make it the the finals, but as long as I've been here neither Hearts nor Bubble, nor Borneo changed the rules just to get rid of a contestant because of trolling.

Me speeding the challenge up due to available competitors isn’t me changing the rules to get rid of anyone. I don’t give a shit about trolls complaining about your submissions or who think we’re the same person. Voting has been the same since round 2 so the only thing changed is that this year’s challenge is half the usual length which sucks but given the fact that it hasn’t been done in a while I’m at least glad that the challenge even got so many people making dishes and I personally thank you for making so many dishes for the challenge regardless of what others think of the quality.

I would try it, of course, but I am not sure on how the flavors would work, such extreme combinations really need to be tried in order to know if they work. Although, an Asian or Arab spice blend on the pork could tie all the flavors together.
Also, it is possible that the sweetness and milkiness of the "yolk" and the milkiness and tartness of the matcha could go together, is everything else I am not sure about

>Even the Gordo Ramso
I fully believe in Michelin ratings, but Ramsay is a fucking hack when he tries anything outside of France and the UK. I always found it funny that people expected him to be some kind of master of every cuisine when he's a classically trained chef who studied in the French tradition, and also a fucking bong. I know he's Scottish, but whenever he tries anything remotely "exotic" it's the most cringe thing ever. I know bongs are supposed to be humble and modest in certain things, but they also have a giant unfounded superiority complex based on centuries of colonization (if you're ever traveling abroad on vacation/holiday and find yourself sitting next to a bong just nod and be polite; they're literally the worst "tourists" on the planet), leading to them having terrible taste in both food and humor.

This. The problem with dim sum wasn't that it was difficult; it was just something that most people probably have made once or twice at most, looks the same no matter how you plate it or what's in it, and it's so specific that there's no room for originality.
>hurr that's not dim sum, it's just some western steamed dumpling
>durr you used the wrong kind of flour and nobody serves dim sum with [x] sauce
The whole point of the challenge is to do something unique and original and come up with a concept and push your comfort zone, not, "recreate specific thing and worry about "authenticity". If you're mad that there aren't enough comfy cook along threads where people just cook simple, tradition food, blame the cat fucker; he's the one who killed OC on /ck/ (or at least put the nail in the coffin).

This one just really didn't get me on plating and appeal. Above all I think it's the color the ahi turned out and the sprouts. I love sprouts, but they're not a garnish. You do have a good eye for flavor combinations, though, and put a lot of tea into the dish in an intelligent way.

Doesn't really seem like a tea dish, and I can't imagine a quick tea smoke really did anything for those ribs. It's a pretty picture but the plating just seems like a mess to me. I'm also not a fan of getting bits of chewy ribs stuck in my teach and having to wash my hands every time I want to imbibe, so I'm a little biased on appeal.

Okay fellow cooksluts the voting is now done and here are the results...

1st place is A FUCKING TIE between nrrwmndd and sakeanon as both scored a modest 15.4 with quaff coming in as the runner up with a score of 13.9.

This means that unfortunately Tiki Doomer, with an average of 12.4, will not be making it into round 5 and will bid farewell to the competition. Thank you very much to Tiki for his contributions in this year's /ck/ Challenge and hope he comes back in 2020 to try again!

With that now the challenge comes to just 3 anons who will compete in round 5 on Monday, which will be the FINAL ROUND of the /ck/ challenge. Please look forward to the thread tomorrow and may the best anon win!

I wasn't expecting to make it to the final round - or for the next round to be the final round - and have never made it to the final round, and never wanted to, as I find "signature dish" to be anathema to the spirit of the competition. That said, I'm honestly disappointed that literally one (1) anon voted in the first open voting round, and they weren't even the person who's been spamming "tiki" shit non-stop. I don't believe I did anything wrong to bring on the vitriol I received and ignored (9/10 times the troll replied to an anonymous post calling out tiki it wasn't even me), but I was expecting this round to be bombarded with votes giving me 0/20, but even the troll(s) didn't care enough to put in the effort to vote. I mean, you have to admit than when the one person who has had a giant hate boner for me since the first round didn't even bother to vote, despite keeping the challenge bumped, there is something seriously wrong. I still had fun cooking stuff; I thought the challenge was dead, and it kind of is. Or maybe it's just time to move on from /ck/ - everyone else seems to have.
