Sushi is a food where there's really a hard upper limit on how much quality can be put into it, especially traditional sushi with raw ingredients. Perhaps the glazes and such he makes for the sushi are unparalleled, but in terms of aesthetics, form and quality of the meats used?

Fine dining is a scam, anyone can learn to cook and it's much cheaper once you get everything sorted out.

You have to have the proper tools and willpower to do so though. One of the hardest things about cooking is how time consuming it is, then you got to weigh in time vs money.

Cooking in of itself isn't hard, the amount of time you have to devote to it can be.

Even niche cooking items like Tandoori ovens can be made pretty easily. I've worked in food service for quite a bit and good chefs are a dime a dozen, cooking is an entry level job up until very specific points.

This. I'm sure there's somebody out there who can boast being the best fry cook in the world, but how much better can his fries be than completely average fries? Would you pay $300 for the best fries in the world?

I'm not even saying sushi in general can't have a high skill ceiling. I've eaten sushi that was miles and miles above supermarket sushi. But those had way more going on than fish on rice. When your only ingredients are uncooked fish, rice and sauce, how good can it possibly be?

It's baffling how ameritards would easily pay the same for a top tier world class raw steak, but if it's fish they simply can't comprehend it being the same or even more rare/expensive than a slab of beef.

>Its fucking fast-food.
>It was literally just raw fish on rice as a snack for poor fishermen to be consumed while they were working on the docks.
Why do brainlets love repeating the "ACTUALLY, sushi was originally just fast food!" meme so much?
http://www.tokyofoundation.org/en/topics/japanese-traditional-foods/vol.-13-funa-zushi
>Historical records of the food date back well over a millennium, according to Terutoshi Hibino, a scholar versed in its history. In his article "Omi no funa zushi no rekishi" (The History of the Funa Zushi of Omi), included in the book Funa zushi o kangaeru (Considerations on Funa Zushi), Hibino writes that the kanji character signifying sushi appears in a document preserved in the Shosoin treasure house, a repository of documents and objects of the Nara period (710-794).
>It is frequently mentioned in documents of the Muromachi period (1333-1568) onward as gifts to aristocratic and samurai families. In the Edo period, moreover, domains of the Omi area presented the food to the shogunate as a local specialty, and the funa zushi of Omi enjoyed the privilege of being designated as a favorite of the shogun family.
http://www.pbs.org/food/the-history-kitchen/history-of-sushi/
>Funa-zushi, the earliest known form of nare-zushi, originated more than 1,000 years ago near Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake. Golden carp known as funa was caught from the lake, packed in salted rice, and compacted under weights to speed up the fermentation. This process took at least half a year to complete, and was only available to the wealthy upper class in Japan from the ninth to 14th centuries.

I wouldn't lead you astray, anon. Especially one that can think economically even without the formal education.

Specifically the term we're looking for is marginal utility per dollar. The perfect consumer balances this out for everything he consumes. But the income effect and personal tastes will make this different for anyone. Therefore there will be people that spending 300 dollars in jiros tasting menu will make sense. Personally I'll take the sub $20 meal I can get for a couple of good rolls and some pieces of sashimi at my local place. As will most. But for some...$300 is one of their cheaper meals.
