because as kids we learned through social norms as well as tv shows and whatnot that kids hate vegetables, especially broccoli and brussel sprouts, so we did too. we don't entirely grow out of that or we never developed a taste for vegetables, so butter is an easy enhancer for anything. also rice, I know a lot of people who can't eat plain white rice without a good tablespoon of butter.

People keep using that image because it is 100% accurate.

Americans are ignorant of world affairs, and can't even point to where other countries on a map. Not because they are stupid or close-minded, but because they sincerely don't need to know. Most Americans probably go weeks or months without having any reason to even think about what's happening in some other country. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's just the way it is.
