All the self-preserving instincts of fear, all reproductive instincts leading to romantic interest in partners and unconditional love of offspring all have the same evolutionary benefits for animals that they do for humans. You really think that human emotion, for all its extraordinary depth and nuance developed suddenly in a random ape mammal? Animals clearly have very developed emotions and pain responses until you get to things like cnidaria and sea sponges where they're primitive enough for things to get ambiguous - but the claim that something like a lobster can't feel pain is some subhuman-tier mental gymnastics.

Well a quick google search brought me to suggestions of putting in on ice, like you've mentioned, then cutting it down the middle. Although they also claim that the boiling water kills them pretty quickly anyway as long as its sufficiently hot. I would probably do the ice and knife method. As long as you take responsibility for what you've done and aren't intentionally torturing it I think it's ethical.

Animals aren't capable of rationalizing pain. It's a need to escape, hide, or otherwise react; mechanism. There's no emotion, just instinst. Sometimes it's just a chemical response like salt touching muscles you're seeing.

Humans have very complex social stuctures when compared to literally any other animal besides maybe eusocial insects, we have language and civilization and benefit from emotions, pair bonding, etc. Those things take a lot of energy from the brain and if a species doesn't benefit from them (and most don't) then those things don't develop. They might have a response to external stimuli that indicates bodily injury, but to say they have higher brain function or emotion is retarded.
