because america isn't known for it's fish industry whereas we (australia) have a massive variety and quantity of fish because we are an island. Even the most low tier corner fish and chip shop will shit on any fish served in a high class american restaurant. Although I have heard of an exception in the state of Maine cause it's so coastal and apparently they enjoy their seafood so I assume they have some quality stuff.

Too many places say they use fresh fish yet it's often pre-battered and flash frozen.
Quality of the fish is also questionable, Aussie caught barra, flathead or whiting is amazing.

That are definitely hit or miss but when you find a good one they are consistent. That's what I want at a chippy. Consistency. You don't have to be the best, but provided your always good I'm happy. Too many places are amazing one day and shit the next.

Also The Chip Box. Only really found in small seaside villages but if you find one then definitely highly reccomended

I lived in northern Melbourne, 15km from the coast. There are no nice fish and chip places within a half hour drive. Nobody is willing to drive to vic market. The fish and chip places all buy their fish from the local fish monger who couldn't tell fresh fish from strömming. I can pay triple and order decent fish and chips from any pub, but not from a fish and chip shop.
Now I live in an inner city suburb. The nearest fish and chip shop is half an hour on public transport.
