As an ESL (English Second Language), I always get confused over words like "fried", "deep fried", "stir fried" and "pan fries".

The differences seem so obvious at first, right, "fried" is another word for "deep fried", so for example "fried potatoes" is the same as "french fries". And "pan fried" potatoes are potatoes fried in a pan.
But then you get things like "fried noodles" and suddenly it means something completely different.

There will always be iconsistencies in the English language because it is so widespread and will have a different meaning depending on where you are (e.g. biscuit, pudding, just to keep it food related).

It means "to jump" in French. You put the food in a wide shallow pan with a little oil, then you toss the food in the pan to move it around and cook it evenly.
