Does sound a little scary doesn’t it? I meant it as a catch-all term for stuff like seitan, tofu, tempeh and the like. Seitan is my personal favorite, good meaty texture and a nice neutral flavor, best of both worlds from tofu ans tempeh imo. Why eat insects when we have bats?

Humans have been eating bats since the dawn of time. There is not a shred of evidence to suggest that bat consumption is unhealthy. Bat borne diseases are from it being undercooked. Any other animal, the person would be at fault for not properly cooking it. Rabies virus dies rapidly after 115 degrees F. A properly cooked bat poses no harm and is a delicious and nutritious snack. Polidori in 1809 with his vampire nonsense, which only got worse with Bram Stoker's books and film adaptations decades later. People were terrified of them in the west since then. The issue with meat substitute/vegan-alternative markets is that they think the average person values moral grandstanding over money. So they play their ads for people to watch on their phones made in slave factories with the explicit purpose of undercutting domestic jobs so they can feel good about buying one burger for the cost of 30.

People will adopt beyond meat-heavy diets when sufficiently nutritious and tasty plant based diets are price-competitive. I guarantee you if a Beyond Burger and a typical dine-in burger were competitive at around the $7 range, it'd already be popular.

Meat substitutes offer flavors and textures, and protein/calorie ratios that are hard to create from scratch. I prefer pea protein and Quorn based meat substitutes. Protein from wheat gluten isn't as good nutritionally, and I'm a bit wary of soy. Mostly thanks to fake meat my diet is about 30% protein, with a very small portion from animal sources.

Bugs really aren’t that bad. Many populations eat them around the world. I’ve kept reptiles my whole life and, being the autist I am, would take their crickets and mealworms to eat them when I was younger, and they’re honestly pretty good. Especially crickets fried in bacon grease then salted. Yummy.
