How do you feel about moving to a more sustainable source of protein in the future?

>> No.12135684

>>12135655
We have to do it eventually, though I’d rather just eat beans and/or meat substitutes on the weekdays and eat a little, high quality, sustainably farmed meat on the weekend or something. Nothing wrong with bugs, just don’t think I’d like them much. This is a bait thread though so nothing of value will come from this discussion.

Does sound a little scary doesn’t it? I meant it as a catch-all term for stuff like seitan, tofu, tempeh and the like. Seitan is my personal favorite, good meaty texture and a nice neutral flavor, best of both worlds from tofu ans tempeh imo. Most of the time I’d rather just eat beans/peas/lentils and mushrooms though.

you do realize there are already places on earth where clean water is scare just to keep hydrated, let alone to run a fish farm, right? insects require very little water and feed. their output to input ratio is better than any fish or mammal.

You'd need at least 10 calories worth of insect to produce one calorie of fish so it's at best 10% as efficient as just eating the insects. It's worse than that though since your other inputs are all also greater when raising fish on insects versus just the insects.

>insects
Why eat insects when we have bats?

Humans have been eating bats since the dawn of time. There is not a shred of evidence to suggest that bat consumption is unhealthy. Bat borne diseases are from it being undercooked. Any other animal, the person would be at fault for not properly cooking it. Rabies virus dies rapidly after 115 degrees F. A properly cooked bat poses no harm and is a delicious and nutritious snack. Bat farming is actually the easiest and cheapest route to raising and eating livestock. Why? You don't need to feed them. They eat insects, mosquitoes, or fruits. And some species are quite big so it's not a small meal. You can pounds of bat every day if you have the husbandry perfected. There is absolutely no disease risk if they are cultivated in good conditions and they excess is eaten. The reason bat populations are so diseased is because they don't have many natural predators. Without natural predators to keep them in check, diseases can thrive and propagate. We now see this with the deer population with their wasting disease, and indeed, we're seeing deer with rabies now too. Bats can be readily processed and cleaned. Bat is eaten by much of the population in south Asia especially Indonesia, was eaten by the warriors of ancient India, and is regarded as a delicacy in upper class Panama. Eating bat inspired da Vinci to draw their delicate wing structure. What ruined bat eating? Polidori in 1809 with his vampire nonsense, which only got worse with Bram Stoker's books and film adaptations decades later. People were terrified of them in the west since then. All because of a work of literal fiction, we stopped eating one of the most bountiful sources of meat of all time. I ask people all the time to prove that bat eating is bad for me. They can't.

Sure, I think the whole "impossible meat" things could be cool.
If I look at food as purely fuel, I'd love to eat something like bread or a shortbread that is just full of good stuff, or sausages that are full of flavours and nice parts, but aren't real meat.

The problem is — healthy food costs more, and lab grown foods cost even more than that.

>80/20 patty costs like $1.50 of beef to make or less.
>Beyond burger is $50

The issue with meat substitute/vegan-alternative markets is that they think the average person values moral grandstanding over money. So they play their ads for people to watch on their phones made in slave factories with the explicit purpose of undercutting domestic jobs so they can feel good about buying one burger for the cost of 30.

People will adopt beyond meat-heavy diets when sufficiently nutritious and tasty plant based diets are price-competitive. I guarantee you if a Beyond Burger and a typical dine-in burger were competitive at around the $7 range, it'd already be popular.

Meat substitutes offer flavors and textures, and protein/calorie ratios that are hard to create from scratch. I prefer pea protein and Quorn based meat substitutes. Protein from wheat gluten isn't as good nutritionally, and I'm a bit wary of soy. Mostly thanks to fake meat my diet is about 30% protein, with a very small portion from animal sources.

Tax meat heavily, sure, but even more important stop the socialist corporate welfare subsidies to meat producers. The artificially low price will rise to it's proper level dropping the artificially manufactured carnist meat lust to just a special occasion treat. Reduced consumption means reduced production and concomitant environmental damage as well as a more healthy citizenry. Everybody wins except the tiny percent of extremist, rabid carnists.

Bugs really aren’t that bad. Many populations eat them around the world. I’ve kept reptiles my whole life and, being the autist I am, would take their crickets and mealworms to eat them when I was younger, and they’re honestly pretty good.
