My dinner tonight is the humble yet delicious Sloppy Joe.
Yes I understand how shit-tier these are but fuck me if they arent delicious with a few onion slices, a few dashes of hot sauce and a lil grated cheddar cheese.
What do you fags do to your joes?
>inb4 i dont eat them
Dont waste my time with your lies bubba, everyone loves sloppy joes.

Lies. A well made sloppy joe is fucking delicious. Just make it yourself instead of buying Manwich.

>1lb 80/20 ground beef
>1 green bell pepper
>1 yellow onion
>3 cloves of garlic
>1 6oz can tomato paste
>1/3 a cup ketchup
>1 teaspoon spicy brown mustard
>1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
>1 tablespoon rolled oats
>1 teaspoon oregano
>1 star anise pod
>salt and pepper to taste

In a large saucepan sear the ground beef, no seasoning no oil. Get it browned and crisp on the edges. Remove from heat and drain the fat. Dice the vegetables and garlic, mix it in. Return to heat and turn it down on low. Add tomato paste, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, spices, and oats. Add water as needed until desired thickness is achieved. Simmer on low while covered about 30 minutes.

i lightly toast them and that kinda helps but you have to eat them quick friend, they are sloppy for a reason!

Don’t forget to fish out the star anise at the end.

sounds good but i'd love to find a recipe without ketchup. using that much ketchup is off-putting to me as i dont like it. ive only seen rachel rays recipe that eliminates the ketchup and her shit kinda sucks desu. not a fan of anise although i doubt i could taste the anise in all of that.

Anise is GOAT seasoning for beef, it’s my favorite spice to use with it. Hmm, if you want to eliminate the ‘chup you could probably use the same volume of crushed tomatoes and like a tablespoon of red wine vinegar.

id prob sub tom sauce instead of crushed or up the paste and add a lil water

I use a slice of colby jack or american cheese.
Sometimes I'll shred some and mix it into the meat. Makes it easier to eat since it stick together better.

Sometimes I mix in a little sweet barbecue sauce.

i use her super sloppy joe recipe but brown the ground beef really dark, up the amount of tomato paste, add extra Worcestershire and red wine vinegar and fish sauce to taste

It seems to be out of stock just about everywhere at the moment, but try the "Sweet and Smokey" Sloppy Joe pouches from McCormick. Sautee ground beef, half an onion, and a bell pepper (I like reds for sweetness) until beef is browned and veggies are tender. Add the sauce pouch as directed and finish it up. Slather that meaty goodness onto an onion roll, sprinkle some good shakes of chipotle powder, and top with a slice of cheese.

Heaven!

original recipe is kind of bland imo; the extra red wine vinegar, worcestershire, and fish sauce helps. I'll occasionally add some old bay in there as well. May try and add some blended chicken liver in there next time

too much worcestershire is kind a bbq-y; fish sauce helps with umami but the flavor is still kind of straight-forward. could oven-braise uncovered to get more of that roasty/maillard flavor but sloppy joes are like a quick weeknight meal. thought livers would bring in a nice minerally element

I can see where he's going with the flavor, but considering the difficulty you could definitely tone it down. Most folks aren't going to chase down chicken livers for lazy sloppy joe night, but a tin of smoked anchovies and a little tweaking will get you close and is a far easier substitute.

is a sloppy just a shitty burger?

theres a half dozen asian markets around that stock liver so i can usually pick it up with the other ingredients. i do have some anchovies and i'll throw a couple in there next time

Not shitty, per se, just a variation. Still, that was only at the beginning when it grew from loose meat sandwiches. Then the 60s hit and an era of convenience and novelty swept over America (hence the simultaneous surge is crazy aspic dishes and mayo-fucking-everything). Anyway, in came companies willing and able to manufacture a pre-made sauce to make dinner easy.

Think about it. A really good burger requires the cook to balance bun to meat to toppings to condiments, but a sloppy joe goes down easy with little more than a "yolo on the meats" all-in bet. A hamburger that's nothing but bun and meat is going to leave most people disappointed, but suddenly you add a can of sauce and it's tolerable again.
