That has always been my definition of "millennial". People who grew up with phones/smartphones/the actual internet being a thing are clearly a different generation than people who grew up in the 90's and still remember pay phones, and went through school without ever texting. Having the internet and social media in your back pocket has to be one of the biggest changes in how humans interact with the world in the entire history of humanity, so if that doesn't constitute a generational shift I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. I honestly have more in common with my parents than I do with someone in their early 20's.

You don't get to pick your own category. It's not complicated, there's a range of cutoff dates and for most people it's really obvious which side of the cutoff dates you fall into e.g. If you were born in 1980 then you would maybe have a good argument for picking either generation to land in, but most of you are younger than I am and well within millennial territory.
It's not meant to necessarily group you in the way that makes you have the most in common with everyone else in your cohort. It's a slightly more convoluted version of shit like decades. The atmosphere of 1991 had more in common with how things were in 1989 than it did with 1999, but that doesn't mean you get to call 1999 part of the 80s.

>The California Reinvestment Coalition (CRC) reported recently that foreclosures on reverse loans soared by 646 percent in 2016. The report by CRC - a network of 300 nonprofit groups in the state working on issues of housing fairness and access - was calculated from data it obtained late last year from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through a Freedom of Information Act request on the agency’s home equity conversion mortgage (HECM) program.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0094119015000509?via%3Dihub
>While reverse mortgages are intended as a tool to enable financial security for older homeowners, in 2014, nearly 12 percent of reverse mortgage borrowers in the federally insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) program were in default on their property taxes or homeowners insurance.
https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/11/real_estate_trouble_reverse_mortgages_deplete_fha_insurance_reserves_.html
>FHA's traditional single-family home loan portfolio program is very profitable due to the housing boom and has a positive economic net worth of +$46.8 billion. But its reverse mortgage program for seniors, called Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) that represents only 6 percent of FHA guarantees, disclosed its economic net worth plunged to a negative -$13.6 billion, almost triple the prior year's negative net worth of -$5 billion.

Boomers are already reaching retirement age having sucked the life out of the economy.
Born in 1946? Already 73 years old.
Born in 1955? 64.
The last group of Boomers born in the early 60's are hitting their 60's now. Anyone left working is probably only doing it to smash as much money into savings & stock portfolios & perhaps to pick up one last investment property before they retire. Even the lazy ones that spent the 70's doing nothing are still far more likely to have bought a house in the 80's or 90's when houses weren't worth 30 years of wages like they are now and shitty apartments weren't worth 10 or 15.
They will also get company/state pensions that no-one as a millennial is likely to ever get.

>99% of what millenials are killing is the result of times changing and priorities shifting

Yes, that's exactly what I said:
>>It's not a case of "can't afford", rather it's a case of "radically different priorities"

Some of the things you mentioned make a lot of sense, like your comment about Applebees. Why eat there when you can make the same at home for a fraction of the cost, or when you could get much better food eating out elsewhere for the same price. That's totally logical.

>>Brick and Mortar stores in a time where Amazon delivers it to your door
That's an example of somethign which is both good and bad. Many of their things are great deals and they save you time and money. They make perfect sense to buy and have delivered. Other things, like having groceries delivered, are substantially more costly than going to a brick-and-mortar store.

Millenials are wise to the fact that many things previous generations spent money on (like Applebee's and their ilk) are massive wastes of money. That said, many millennial have their own version of that: buying the latest and greatest memephone when they really can't afford it, spending extra money to have things delivered when it's cheaper to buy them yourself, prioritizing entertainment over essentials, etc. One of my best friends is always griping that he's broke, yet when I suggest to him that maybe he doesn't need to buy the latest Iphone every time one comes out, or might want to rethink his $200-a-month cable TV sports package when he can't afford rent he looks at me like I just told him to murder a puppy.

>> No.12123353

>it just doesnt make sense for 90% of us when renting is the superior option in most cases.
Not in metro Detroit. Renting is twice the price of owning. I bought a house in royal oak and my mortgage is only $860/month. Spend that on rent and at best you get a one bedroom apartment. I took all the money I had made during high school and instead of spending it all on tuition and taking loans to cover the rest I spent it on a sizeable downpaymemt in a good neighborhood. Two years later my house is being appraised $60k higher than I bought it. Home ownership is only a financial burden if you buy the wrong house in the wrong area. Buy smart and you will make money on the house. I learned that from my parents who made a combined $350k on their two houses they bought and sold. They got paid an average of $17.5k a year to live in their houses and I intend to make those same moves too. The difference between their generation and the millennial is their parents went through the Great Depression and taught them how to be frugal with money and use it wisely. Millennials have no idea how to handle finances properly and constantly make stupid purchases which is why most of them barely have $1,000 in the bank.

You honestly believe the average person is somehow managing this while paying for school? There's not even any correlation between your two points, you simply state that people own credit cards and use it to pay for things, thus increasing charges on their bill(bills are not debt) then assume people are throwing hoardes of cash on expensive items and THAT is why they can't pay tuition without aide because you have a friend with poor decision making skills. Almost everyone I know is currently on a payment plan for their phone.

Perfect example of a millennial not understanding finance. Debt is only accrued because people don’t have saving to pay for things up front. If they did they wouldn’t be in debt. See how that works?

>>12123472
Housing loans are a necessary evil for most people, always have been and always will be. The difference is a house is not a depreciating asset. If you buy in the right area it will actually be an appreciating asset making it worthwhile to finance responsibly. Auto loans should only be taken if you could pay for the car upfront. If you can’t afford to buy the car in cash then you can’t afford it and you’re leveraging debt to live beyond your means. If you have the money in the bank to buy that $35k car then go ahead and finance it at very low interest rate and keep your money liquid and available. No need to part with it all at once.

>the present situation is not indicative of a healthy economy.
The economy is a self correcting machine. It will take care of itself. The boomers threw a rench into the system when they told every single kid that the HAD to go to college or they would be utter failures living on the street. Then boomer politicians decided the government should insure student loans so that lenders would be more lenient on who they lent money too. As soon as universities saw that the lenders were willing to give out insane amounts of money due to the government guaranteeing the loans they started raising the prices and 18 year old kids who were never taught anything about financial responsibility signed on the dotted line for loans that would indebt them for half their life.

No, while going into debt to pay for school.

There's not supposed to be. that's why they have their own number. they are entirely different points.

>thus increasing charges on their bill(bills are not debt
Statistically most credit card users don't pay off their bills every month. They keep a balance, which is debt.

>>are throwing hoardes of cash on expensive items and THAT is why they can't pay tuition without aide because you have a friend with poor decision making skills
not one friend, many. And I can observe similar patterns of poor decision making among people who are not my friends. For example: how many young people waste $2 on an energy drink which contains $.03 worth of Caffeine in it? How many people pay for uber when they can walk or bike? How many people have food delivered when it would be much cheaper to cook, or to get takeout? You can observe this poor decision making everywhere in today's world. Open your eyes and look around you: examples of wasteful spending are everywhere.

Have you seen the Starbucks's shareholder's report? It contains page after page breaking down the age groups of their customers, average spending, profit data, etc. I've got information in front of me showing hundreds of millions of purchases of extremely overpriced products. It's the opposite of a hot take or anecdote. It's solid data. It turns out that these days companies have great sales data because so many people pay with cards or online systems. Companies know exactly who is spending what, and you can access this data too.

Of course not every "millennial" engages in that exact behavior, but statistically the majority of them do.

Now understand that we have the same data for all kinds of other things people spend money on: phones, cars, homes, movies, music, streaming services, food, etc.

Unless you mean black market by general market, it's still heavily marked up. Legalization does wonders for the black market prices. California is just now starting to get an uptick in black market prices due to those 1st wave farm licenses running out. Even that is like an extra $300/lb, and hopefully that's gonna be the ceiling.
