That has always been my definition of "millennial". People who grew up with phones/smartphones/the actual internet being a thing are clearly a different generation than people who grew up in the 90's and still remember pay phones, and went through school without ever texting. Having the internet and social media in your back pocket has to be one of the biggest changes in how humans interact with the world in the entire history of humanity, so if that doesn't constitute a generational shift I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. I honestly have more in common with my parents than I do with someone in their early 20's.

It's not complicated, there's a range of cutoff dates and for most people it's really obvious which side of the cutoff dates you fall into e.g. If you were born in 1980 then you would maybe have a good argument for picking either generation to land in, but most of you are younger than I am and well within millennial territory.
It's not meant to necessarily group you in the way that makes you have the most in common with everyone else in your cohort. It's a slightly more convoluted version of shit like decades. The atmosphere of 1991 had more in common with how things were in 1989 than it did with 1999, but that doesn't mean you get to call 1999 part of the 80s.

Not in metro Detroit. Renting is twice the price of owning. I bought a house in royal oak and my mortgage is only $860/month. Spend that on rent and at best you get a one bedroom apartment. I took all the money I had made during high school and instead of spending it all on tuition and taking loans to cover the rest I spent it on a sizeable downpaymemt in a good neighborhood. Two years later my house is being appraised $60k higher than I bought it. Home ownership is only a financial burden if you buy the wrong house in the wrong area. Buy smart and you will make money on the house. I learned that from my parents who made a combined $350k on their two houses they bought and sold. They got paid an average of $17.5k a year to live in their houses and I intend to make those same moves too. The difference between their generation and the millennial is their parents went through the Great Depression and taught them how to be frugal with money and use it wisely. Millennials have no idea how to handle finances properly and constantly make stupid purchases which is why most of them barely have $1,000 in the bank.

Housing loans are a necessary evil for most people, always have been and always will be. The difference is a house is not a depreciating asset. If you buy in the right area it will actually be an appreciating asset making it worthwhile to finance responsibly. Auto loans should only be taken if you could pay for the car upfront.
