And most of the large population of zero calorie / diet soda drinkers are overweight, so clearly calories from soda isn't the reason for obesity or else you'd see everyone drinking zero calorie soda become normal weight.

It's mostly fat people drinking diet shit. They got fat from the HFCS in regular soda first so now they're trying to mitigate the damage to their body with artificial sweeteners.......which still can have a fattening effect on the body as they alter your gut biome and still produce an insulin response.......and if you knew dick about insulin you'd know that in the presence of it your body won't happily mobilize fatty acid via lipolysis.

Should we also touch on the fact that fructose is an obesegen and is literally meant to make you fat? It first has to pass through your liver before it can be used by the rest of your body, and once your liver is full of glycogen(stored form of sugars) there's a spillover effect that makes the conversion of carbohydrate to fat that much easier for your body.

So yes, big macs and fast food do contribute to obesity, but sugar and the over consumption of carbohydrates in general are the main factor.
