You're both dumb faggots trying to be bossy and condescending on fucking 4channel. It's a gay anime image board. Nothing here has to have any merit of LOL GREAT OC UPBOAT quality because we're not the babysitters for your entertainment, you little shitdick, you fucking child. OP posted a weird cookbook which he found and thought was interesting. That's a normal day on 4channel.

Now, what's not normal is you and your little crybaby spiel, your pompous attempt at one-upping a stranger online for no reason. You're the one posting for (You)s. Well, it was labelled that in the grocery back then in 1970s. Also Syria used to have at least 3 religions before they got nasty and exclusive like that. Not everyone has a problem with bacon. There was a surge of Syrian immigration to the USA starting in the late 60s, and the overwhelming majority were Christians til mid-60s. This cookbook is '78 so items in the groceries and in restaurants, particularly in the NY boroughs would be popular.

The gelatin egg salad before the recipe is particularly intriguing.

https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/368274472/

Hartford Courant, 8/29/1971

A group of women vacationing at Beach Park in Clinton have added an interesting project to their list of summer activities. After a month of trading recipes, they decided to publish a cookbook. "It's Not Even Four O'Clock" is the name of the cookbook which will be printed and ready for sale on Sept. 1. The name is unusual yet has quite a logical explanation. Food and what to serve for dinner inevitably would dod into the daily conversation at the beach. Finally, the women decided not to mention food until at least four o'clock in the afternoon. If someone would slip and mention a recipe, another would reply, "It's not even four o'clock!" The women have been working on the cookbook for more than a month. There are approximately 150 recipes in the book from appetizers to desserts. Many are family favor ites, such as one for fresh fish, while some have been passed along from generation to generation, such as a Sabbath bread.

Organizing the project are Mrs. Maurice Schwarz of Middletown, Mrs. Victor Cupferberg, Mrs. Herman Neidetz, Mrs. Raymond Chintz, all of West Hartford; and Mrs. Herbert Freedman of Longmeadow, Mass. Editing the book was Mrs. Schwarz, and Mrs. Neiditz was assistant editor. Mrs. Gruen wrote the introduction, while the rest served as staff members in various capacities, Mrs. Michael Berkovitch of Montreal, Canada, is the official typist. The cover illustration of a woman in a bathing suit and apron was drawn by Mrs. Jack Opinsky of West Hartford. Recipe illustrations were drawn by Mrs. Zane Mirkin of Longmeadow, Mass. The cookbook is now the topic of conversation at the beach, and many families have already asked for extra copies for friends and relatives. Anyone interested in obtaining a copy may contract Mrs. Schwarz, 669-5577, or Mrs. Neidetz, 669-8975.

>The Beach Park Point Association of 2019 wouldn't have any clue, I'm sure.
Oh, you never know...people could still be alive or inherited mom and pops condo by the ocean. They were usually weekend places/second homes, not exclusive residences to raise whole families like they are now.

My grandfathers were Delta pilots and there was this whole "club" of wives who got together for social gatherings, skysteppers, if I recall. And, my parents have a beach condo and during the "season" of snowbirds going to it, the social committee puts on a daily this or that, including weekly potlucks. Anyone that does Junior League or german-american clubs or Kiwanis... Eventually, the recipes need to be published since they are shared so often and well, fundraisers can happen too when someone finds a need to fundraise. I simply LOVE the books handed down to me, as well as finding them in thrift stores too. Like the syrian wedges that went from freezer to oven at the time of unexpected company, these recipes were treasured by people for good reasons like that. Many of my favorite go to recipes come out of my pantry, like alot of these items. That tongue looks like sauerbraten, but the tongue is already cooked, so that's a freezer/pantry recipe! The item I make like it would be my picadillo, which uses frozen hamburger, sweet sour savory too, with the olive brine and raisins like that, and I can have precooked sweet plantains ready to thaw and reheat.

I know you're just a sheltered 20-year-old zoomer but preserved foods were revolutionary in the early-min 1900's and women it was life-changing to not have to cook lengthy meals every single day. Imagine growing up in an age where dinner was a mandatory 2-3 hour affair, to the spread of microwaves and preserved food letting you cook an entire meal in anywhere from 5-30 minutes. Thats what you little shits will never understand, that making healthy hpme-cooked meals is an optional thing now, back then it was a chore.

That being said, some canned vegetable soup simmered wihh ground beef and spices tastes great on rice, and its convenient as fuck not having to spend 1-2 hours making that shit from scratch.

Yeah it could. Too bad threads like these trigger the autists that just want to talk about politics and the finer points of McDonald's.

A lot of these supposedly 'weird' recipes are actually a lot better than one might think. Tomato-soup chocolate cake is definitely one of them; think of rich dark chocolate paired with the subtle saltiness and savouriness of tomato soup. You'll have to adjust the salt, but the results are incredible.

Could you scan and put it up somewhere for us? I know you're dumping but something like this should to be preserved and archived so others can see how people created recipes for local circles before the age of information came in and homogenized everything.

OP here, quick update.

I actually mailed out four letters yesterday: one to the association named on the last page of the book, and three to women from the first page who Google suggests may still be alive. (Tried my best to make sure I was using their most recent addresses, but who knows.)

I'd really like to obtain the first volume and then scan everything in, but I'll do just the second one if that's all I can get. We'll see what happens.

Water chestnuts. They're often used in prepackaged chicken or tuna salad instead of celery because they stay crunchy even after being canned or packaged.

Mayo chocolate cake actually works extremely well. But you have to use ACTUAL FUCKING MAYO, not “sandwich spread” or “mayo sauce” or whatever. It keeps cakes really moist and adds a good lift. You don’t need much and you can’t taste it.

If any of you are interested, EmmyMadeInJapan has a Youtube series dedicated to making retro recipes. Most of them are weird as hell, but it’s neat to see the sorts of things they used to make back in ye olden days of jello pudding and canned meats.
