I should have gotten a counter depth fridge but otherwise I am pretty happy with my kitchen's layout, but it could use some updates. I like to work on renovating a single part of my house at a time. It's the kitchen's turn so I'll be improving it hopefully. This was my first house so I kept most of the old appliances (except the fridge) and decor.

I will be getting new appliances sometime this year. They're a bit dated. I'll probably redo the countertops and island at the same time because the current material just looks dirty so quickly.

I might expand the island a bit since I never use the dining room table (it's just me at the house). A rack for pots and pans wouldn't be amiss either. The ceiling in that room is lofted but a hanging rack might be ok. Haven't really mapped out exactly what I want to do.

You're not wrong. While the house is in good shape (it's only about 20 years old) there were some seriously odd design choices. Some were easy enough to fix, like having fake wood paneling instead of drywall in the basement (the cost difference is probably in favor of the drywall even if it was a bit of work to hang it) and the back deck looks like some of the wood wasn't pressure treated.

But, I'm doing all the work myself because I'm learning as I go, and I have to prioritize things.

Nothing I have can’t also be controlled the old fasihioned way if I so choose so if you network went down everything simply reverts back to normal operation. There’s no downside. The upsides are I can program my lights to come on when I pull in the driveway and turn off when I drive away. I can hop in bed for the night and with a simple voice command shut down all the lights in the house. I can turn on the basement lights with my hands being full with a laundry basket. I can make sure my doors are locked without having to get up and check them. Because my house is in an old neighborhood built in the 40’s I get poor natural lighting which back in the day helped keep the house cool in the summer before air conditioning was common. With my lights able to change color I can make them replicate daylight during the daytime to make it fell like there is plenty of natural light and at night automatically switch to the warmer yellow light people are used too. Since I need all the daylight I can get I have to open all the blinds during the day and then close them all again at night which is a pain. If I can automated that daily task for a reasonable price I will.

The only expensive part was the Philips hue lights which I know will likely be a fraction of the price in a few years but that’s the price you pay to be an early adopter. Overall the money spent isn’t that much in the long term considering they’re all LED and should last for a decade or more. Extrapolate the costs over the time the devices will be used for and it really wasn’t that big of an investment. Plus it makes me happy so there’s that. The neighborhood kids love my house on Halloween when all the lights are blood red and my smoke machine is flooding out my front door.

No it was there when I bought the place. It not laid 100% perfect but the house (and the whole city) was built in the 1940’s nothing is perfect after 80 years. The floors in places have settled slightly in places. You can feel where the major support beams are under the floor for instance when you walk on the hardwood that’s covering the rest of the house. I’m sure the original hardwood is under that tile and it isn’t perfect either so therefor the tile will never be perfect. I’m actually saving a large amount of money to completely gut and rebuild the interior of the house and add a second story in about 10 years.

Dishwashers save a shitload of time (and energy/water in most cases).
One study measured the average time for cleaning and drying 140 pieces: 80 minutes, compared to 15 minutes loading and unloading a dishwasher. People on average use 4 times the water too.
Even for just a few items it is far faster to put the thing in the dishwasher than it is to clean it manually.

The cooker unit? It's pretty good, the oven is self cleaning (doesn't work great but it helps), the hob has quite a lot of flame control and a massive wok ring which gets very good heat. The oven heats quickly and maintains well, and has about a dozen functions which I completely ignore and just use one. Also it has a nice hatch at the bottom to store your frying pans.
The extractor is also smeg and it rocks, it's almost too powerful for the room, you can feel your hair lifting up. And it means I can actually cook fish in the house now.

So we are buying a house and moving from our shit tier rental with the electric cooktop. Is gas a dealbreaker for anyone? I really want to cook on a gas range again

>> No.11940629

>>11940600
Gas is 100% worth it if its available in your area, nothing else comes close. Old style exposed electric coils are ok, but recessed coils and induction are absolute dogshit and should never be used. I would rather use a meth lab style exposed coil hotplate than those recessed electric coil stoves, and I like my alu pans

There are some neighborhoods with gas and some without and I'm erring on the side of avoiding the ones without natural gas. I heard your kitchen gets stickier using gas because of the water vapor? Still probably worth it over fucking smooth top electric ranges

>> No.11940667

>>11940640
If you're cooking anything greasy you should be using a vent hood anyway, it saves cleaning up grime from everything. Smooth top electric is so fucking shitty I don't understand how anyone can live like that. Also, depending on where you live, gas is super cheap. Best house I lived in had a gas stove and wall mounted gas heating, and my utilities bill was basically nothing, because natural gas is close to free in Texas

>> No.11940733

>>11940600
it probably wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. finding that right house can be a challenge.

but:

if there's no gas onsite, get a quote on the cost of having a line installed. this can be VERY expensive. i believe my buddy said it would have cost him $10,000+ and his neighbor has a gas line to their (neighbor's) house.

you might want to also consider looking into propane. it's not as efficient in cold weather, but you can do things to deal with this.

those asian gas burners are also an option

My oven glove has a magnetic bit on it that lets me mag it to the side of the cooker hood where you can’t see it. Also I dont have a fire extinguisher, fire safety is for breeders. Yes it’s a fucking small kitchen but what do you want me to do? Move my kitchen into the living room and shove my sofa and tv into the kitchen? I did the best I could with what I had available. Also why would you ever have a fire in your kitchen? I don’t understand this, maybe if you deep fry a lot but I tend to deep fry in the garden with a portable, I’d rather not have the walls of my flat running with grease like a pauper.
