Depends on too many factors to make blanket decisions. Especially the cheese, and onions and cheese really compliment each other.

My personal favorite hamburger is raw red onions, cilantro, mayo, hot sauce (cholula pref). No cheese.

If a burger's particularly cheese heavy, then carmelized onions, but still depends on the cheese.

I agree that if the onion is going to be raw, go red or go home. If you're doing raw onion you should also go for a burger with no cheese, definitely no ketchup, a little mustard and mayo and I like the suggestion for a hot sauce.

Caramelized onions work really well to add sweetness, but if you want a real game changer: put the onions onto the patty and then melt your cheese over the caramelized onions. Once melted, the cheese keeps the onions in place with no effort.

>> No.11909324

>>11908374
Red onions on a burger are the only sane choice for raw, and I personally enjoy a classic lettuce/onion/tomato/cheese burger. Caramelized onions are fine, but only if you're going for something like a mushroom burger, or just cheese.

>> No.11909328

>>11909303
I've had raw onions where white (maybe sweet?) were perfectly good. My second favorite burger is lots of finely diced white onion, pickle relish, one slice of lettuce, mayo, ketchup, yellow mustard.

These are all very boring, conventional toppings, but if the patty is really good, and the bun is very good, then it works, really really well.

That said, I think my cilantro/red onion/hot sauce combination works better. They seem to compliment the taste of the patty better.

There's nothing in particular about yellow mustard, pickle relish, etc. that compliments good beef.

>> No.11909333

>>11909328
That combination with the cilantro leads me to think you'd like to try out a pico de gallo with (hot peppers) as a topping. Give it a shot some time.

Cooked if white raw if red, both have different situations where the other is better.
Standard burger (beef, sauce, lettuce, tomato and buns) though I would say raw red onion maybe if the burger had some different ingredients the caramelized would work better but I just find the flavors gets a bit lost on the most regular burgers.
