Who do you trust for general beer reviews? I find that BA and RB are too biased towards Midwestern beer. Been getting digital BC for a couple years now, though this is the first time they've sent me a real magazine. It's mostly the user ratings, which I'd imagine have something to do the Midwest being the one major beer region where people don't go outside, so the number of reviews biased towards Midwest breweries is way out of balance since they sit at home all day in front of the computer.

>> No.11898993

>>11898982

I was talking about the user reviews. If you just look at the most reviewed beers it's overwhelmingly midwest based, and obviously people are going to be more biased towards their local breweries.

>> No.11899046

>>11898993
>If you just look at the most reviewed beers it's overwhelmingly midwest based
The 25 most frequently reviewed beers are from:
California: 11
Midwest: 6
East Coast: 4
Belgium: 2
Canada: 1
Mountains: 1

So not sure where you are coming from. By your own metric they overwhelmingly overrate California beers

Also, I don't really think this is a relevant metric, all beers are primarily reviewed by local drinkers, so if anything by that metric we would underrate breweries with wide distribution and overrate ones that only distribute locally which is plausible but I don't see how it would favor any particular region.

Honestly I think the one thing that these sites primarily overrate is Euro stuff because Americans love to act like European beer is better than it is

I must have missed that. Thats not how the ratings work. Do you have any data to even suggest that midwestern beers get rated the most? Everything I have seen suggests otherwise though Midwesterners do drink much more craft beer (and macro beer) than most coasties so that part is at least plausible. Still, none of this thesis makes sense
>So yeah, if twice as many people from the midwest than California are rating both Bell's and Lagunitas
But this is a bad assumption because midwesterners are going to be drinking way more BElls than LAgunitas and westerners vice versa.

Lets just start on where this data that shows midwesterners rate beers way more often than everyone else comes from. Also the idea that people from Wisconsin are biased toward Chicago or Michigan beers, like I definitely think some minor bias toward your city or even state is plausible but no fucking way are midwesterners biased toward beers from other states just because they also are midwestern states. If anything I would suspect midwesterns would have bias against beers from neighboring states

Limited/Regional distribution means that a few bars might special order a keg here and there; it's not sold in California. Nobody gives a shit about the South, and obviously a midwest beer is going to be sold in the midwest. So that leaves New York, Colorado, and Arizona. It's not sold anywhere on the West Coast or in New England - the two biggest beer regions in the country. So yeah, who the fuck do you think is reviewing Bell's?

>> No.11899207

>> No.11899222

Almost no one lives in most western states. If you do that map by population density its most of the country. Also this is really beside the point. Bells doesn't have quite the distro of Lagunitas I assume, but both are very widely distributed, but I don't even see how this line matters to the argument you are trying to make.

Remember, California is a much larger state than Michigan so way more people are going to be biased toward California beers than Michigan ones because way more people can consider them local

Cherry picking eh? Yes, numale-targeted beer is a small variety of beer.

But ask yourself this question. How many wines or spirits have references to memes or the latest flavour of the month manchild television program? They don't because those drinks aren't as immediately understandable and don't offer as much instant gratification unlike the latest capeshit film that will cause the average numale to shake with excitement.

I mean the explanation works with beer too. How many wild ales do you seen with cringeworthy branding? It's usually mass appeal NEIPAs and pastry stouts that appeal to unsophisticated manchild palates.

Too syrupy and boozy, made you feel queasy by the end of it. Chili was a strange flavor infusion, ended up tasting vaguely fruity which just didn't work with the already overwhelming chocolate/whatever taste.

Managed to get myself a bottle of this and had great expectations for it only to be let down. It’s certainly good but not for the price. I paid 10 eurocoin for it and 5 more on shipping. The taste was similar to gulden draak but a bit more refined and well composed. Whereas gulden draak’s flavours come in stages this came all at once (again, in a well composed way) and had a longer aftertaste. It's actually amazing how much of a difference the proper glassware makes. I always thought it was pretentious bullshit when I was younger but having tried it- and done a couple of side-by-side tests- it can absolutely make a big difference.

Generally I use tulip type glasses but I recently got some of those Teku glasses and really like them.

Having said that, there is definitely misinformation out there- one of the biggest I think is brandy snifters. Good brandy is way better out of an actual liquor tasting glass, with a glencairn-type shape. There's a reason that's what they use at the actual distilleries. Something like pic related is pretty ideal- after trying a ton of glasses for armagnac/cognac, these were my favorite.

When your schtick is pumping out gimmick beers time and time again, it gets old. No one is really going to you to stock up for a camping trip or family gatherings. You're moving little volume and distributors really care about that. You can make some okay money, but you'll never really be able to compete with companies like sierra nevada, founders, etc.

Its both, a higher percent of millennials drink craft beer than anyone else. Even within Boomers there is a significant age gradient. Older boomers are much less likely to drink craft beer than younger ones as a lot of younger ones have recently converted and continue to but most older ones don't give a fuck to change, and today's elderly population, older than the boomers are even worse for this.

But just given every groups current rate of drinking craft beer, the percent of all beer drank that is craft will would continue to increase pretty consistently as old people continue to die unless the zoomers move away from craft beer as they come of age for some reason

There are so many breweries now everyone needs a niche. Most of the more basic craft beer is just stuff you are getting at the grocery store from the bigger regional craft breweries, and base porters, stouts red ales or whatever are not at all uncommon in that space, if we are talking the newest wave of craft beer their business model often has to be based off taproom sales because we are very rarely going to see any of these become mult-istate regional players anymore like many of the breweries from the 00s aimed for. This taproom model requires new and interesting stuff you can't just get at the any grocery store to bring people in which now often means NEIPA and pastry stout or BA stuff

Yeah, SN's only chance at long term success is to continue to fight and take market from the macros, they are never going to stop local craft brewers from taking their current market, as has been happening for a while
