Well definitions are tricky since people have their own opinions. I would say grill is the surface you think of with "grill marks" or a gas grill. A BBQ is coal or wood. You can smoke on a BBQ when you cook at a low temperature for a long time with wood. You can also smoke with a smoker

From Merriam-Webster dictionary:
to roast or broil on a rack or revolving spit over or before a source of heat (such as hot coals)

a large animal (such as a steer) roasted whole or split over an open fire or a fire in a pit

an often portable fireplace over which meat and fish are roasted

So bbq can refer to a manner of cooking; a container to cook in and also the results of that process.

barbecue as a technical term for people who don't know how to barbecue that come from the center of town and think they can learn about the world from a backyard experiment concocted by a webpage or book

the argument was whether it's the same thing as grilling
so, technically, you're wrong on both accounts
if anything, to barbecue is the general term for the act in and of itself, not any specific method during which. don't throw definitions at me.

Learning to barbecue is mostly about the sauce, the methods of cooking, and the enjoying of the food and company.
You need patience, good meat, lots of aluminum foil, and you should learn to marinate.
Fuck around with different kinds of wood chips and coals.
This - >>11764683 is actually crucial as well.
Learn what states do barbecue and see what they're all about.
Don't buy that 6-10$ bottle of "____-Style BBQ Sauce" and slather a rack of chops in it calling it "____style pork chops" or I will come and kill you.

Go to a barbecue festival or BBQ get-together, food trucks specializing in a region of BBQ, etc., and learn what you like. Talk to the people and learn what they have to say. It'll sound pretty simple and plain at first, but the more you talk to real pit masters the more you'll learn about what BBQ'ing means to others, and you won't come off as a soyboy faggot who gets all wrangled up in definitions to help organize his faggy existence and way of thinking...

so don't get all pissy the next time someone tries to give you their perspective on barbecuing and tells you that grilling is different from bbq'ing and charcoal.

propane's flame generates weaker heat than glowing coals or embers. It also provides no smoky flavor. Some people think it gives a nasty taste due to the chemicals added to gas so that we can smell leaks.

Charcoal varies a lot depending on if you're talking briquettes or lump charcoal. The former varies a lot in quality depending on the brand. The latter is much better, burns hotter and burns longer, but is more costly. Frankly I think it works out cheaper in the end despite its higher price because you don't need as much. The expensive Jap stuff (Binchotan) is better still.

Wood is god tier.

Coal? You mean like dug out of the ground? You don't BBQ wit that unless you want your food to taste like motor oil.
