The tulip shape is a common shape in a lot of glasses because it focuses the aroma, making it easier to get a real smell in there. You can find this shape in cognac and beer glasses as well, the specific "whiskey" shape is just to make it a whiskey glass and not a generic glass.

Of all the weird glasses out there, you choose the whiskey glass to make fun off? You couoldn't have chosen those stupid tequila glasses, which I'm pretty sure are just candle holders?

Here you can see a cognac glass that uses a similar shape. As you can see, the foot is different to differentiate it, making it a cognac glass and not a whiskey glass for instance. That's just tradition and doesn't have anything to do with the experience itself, different drinks have different styles of glass, but the shape is the same, and it is that way because it sends the aroma into your nose.
So no, it's not a meme.

You have to meme it into existence.

Supposedly, it’s supposed to funnel most of the alcohol burn towards the sides of the glass at the bottom, and send the aromatics upwards through the glass

It mostly just concentrates the aroma. I actually tried drinking the same whiskey out of a rocks glass and a glencairn side by side and i feel like it made a way bigger difference than i had expected.

It's pretty easy to understand just looking at them, compare a tulip glass and a rocks glass and imagine how the aroma will travel out of it, after all aroma is a real physical thing that can be manipulated to move where you want it

Except the Glencairn glass, which is what OP is talking about, is not traditional. It was developed in early 2000 with the aim of optimising the whisky experience. Tumblers are more traditional for whisky.

I hate the look of them and they feel shit in your hand but they work to intensify the aromas and you can nose the drink so much better. In a high proof drink it can even be too intense for noobs.

I use them for the real good stuff I want to enjoy slowly and savour.
