How long do you use toothbrushes for, /ck/? I use a normal soft toothbrush for a month and a half.

Apparently, that's too long. I should be switching it every week.

Also, is it true that electric toothbrushes aren't worth the hype?

>> No.11580416

it actually doesn't matter
as long as you brush after every meal, you're good. Use a toothbrush until it falls apart, if you want.

>> No.11580418

They're now designing toothbrushes with weak handles that snap after a while. I've had several toothbrushes snap in half while brushing. It's no accident.

"Hijacking" the thread with a question for the /his/ boys here:
Considering brushing our teeth is a fairly "new" concept, how was dental hygiene in Ye Olde Days?
I know it was pretty shit and all, but why do we stick to it so strongly nowadays when it was otherwise "natural" to not brush our teeth?

I'm 3/4ths of the way through Dental school, if any of you have any questions about this stuff.

OP, Electric toothbrushes absolutely ARE worth the hype because most people are absolutely terrible at brushing their teeth. They don't brush the right places, or brush too hard resulting in a lot of chronic irreversible problems. Theoretically there is no difference but unless you are going to watch youtube videos on the modified Stillman's technique and copy what you see there exactly then just get an electric brush. It gets the motion down perfect and most of them have a force feedback sensor for when you're brushing too hard.

Follow the package directions on when to replace your brush, there's usually some kind of color indicator on the nylon bristles.

No offense bro but dental assistants don't really get any education on this stuff. Sensodyne is only useful if you have sensitivity, otherwise the cheapest shit you can get that has Sodium or Stannous Fluoride is good enough.

The real rip off is the Tom's of Maine bullshit that is basically nice flavor paste that does absolutely nothing for your teeth. You might as well be brushing with water at that point and saving money.

This is true but is a more complex question. People had a lot of sand/ground stone in their diets from millstones which made teeth wear down very quickly. Additionally, the type of diet carbs you eat influences how severe tooth loss is on a population level through regulation of something called Parotid releasing hormone.

Sensodyne does work for sensitivity. If you don't have sensitivity, then any toothpaste is fine (own brand is good, price doesn't matter). It's all about technique.

You want pic related. Hold it above the gingival line (where gum meets tooth), then on the tooth itself for 3 seconds each, on all sides of the tooth.

Electric toothbrushes are the goat, not even meming. If you brush too hard with a manual you'll end up with receding gums. With an electrical, you hold it lightly on each tooth and it does all the work for you.

Get it checked out and have an X-Ray at least (especially if you bashed your face/tooth)
If it's bothering you, it could probably be easily restored with a composite.

If it's a very light chip it's probably not worth the trouble. Dentist will have to shave away more enamel to make sure the composite has enough surface to stick to. Only worth it if it is causing you sensitivity or the appearance of it bothers you.

No I'm saying removing otherwise healthy tooth structure to fix something that may not really a problem just puts you as risk of causing additional problems for yourself. Very small class IV restorations are basically begging to come off every few years which is very good for your dentist but not so good for anon.

Unfortunately being around a lot of Dentists day in and day out made me very aware that a large percentage of dentists would be glad to pretend that it's a problem and make a little free money when it may not be. It's why having a dentist you trust is very important, not all of us are very ethical, sadly.

>>11580539
Plaque removal comes from action of the bristles, nothing to do with the toothpaste. Abrasive dentrifices do exist but having normal people use them on a regular basis is asking for pic related to happen

It's like they don't know that they supposed to clean their mouths. It's tragic that so many people lose their teeth from a lack of basic awareness of hygiene.

Otherwise, it's the same for everyone else who's born here - I've not noticed a distinct correlation.

FOB chinks have terrible dental problems because they don't brush and smoke like chimneys

Past them, Hispanics born abroad are really bad because they all seem to have this same belief that the back teeth don't matter and that it's only the front ones that do.

For actual Americans, I've noticed a distinct cluster of white upper middle class hipsters with awful teeth who do shit like pass out without brushing their teeth often b/c weed/booze and have a pretty poor diet.

One of my patients is in her early 30s and we just wrote out a $25k treatment plan for her including multiple extractions/implants because she just can't get behind brushing her teeth as often as she should. She's basically being worked to death to pay off a bunch of student loans and is dealing with a combo of weed mouth and depression and teeth are rotting as a result.
