Don't just dive head first into whiskey. Know what kind you like first. I spent $25 on a 350mL bottle of bourbon once. That's when I learned that I didn't even like good bourbon. I'm going to try a similar priced Scotch next. I'm still learning, but from what I know so far, I think Irish whiskey is my thing.
Taste a few to know what kind of whiskey you like. Then when you get a really nice one of that kind, you'll notice the difference.

Never blind buy any booze.
Find an upscale tavern that specializes in high end booze.
Talk to the bartender, try and learn about which is which, try out samples (not all on one visit, of course.)
Develop your own taste as you start sampling and finding favorites. Be choosy, be discriminating when you do this.
Fact: Most expensive booze tastes like shit. Out of all the possibilities, I've found only a few favorites.
You don't have to spend big $$$ for good booze. None of my favorites go for more that $35-40 a bottle. Some much less.
