When done correctly, shaking and stirring should both chill and dilute equally, though shaking will get you there a bit faster. The big difference is that shaking aerates the drink, which is what you want with punch-type drinks with citrus, like the margarita or whiskey sour. You don't want aeration to bruise the velvet texture of the liquor with spirit forward drinks, such as the martini, manhattan, whiskey cocktail and negroni.

Ice balls are a meme. Yes, they do look cool, but they melt very slowly, leaving a warm layer (warmer than the rest of the drink) on the surface of the drink. So each time you take a sip, you're getting that warm, watery layer.

The Whiskey Cocktail, and all true cocktails for that matter, are best served up, in a chilled cocktail goblet. When the drink is properly stirred and chill- diluted with ice, and then strained into the goblet, you have optimum chill, perfect dilution, and the drink won't further dilute with melting ice.

If you insist on having your drink on-the-rocks, a couple 1-1/4" cubes work best.

A properly made whiskey cocktail will not mask the character of the whiskey. You’re adding just enough water dilution to open up the flavor of the whiskey, just enough sugar to round out its flavor, and just enough bitters to mitigate the harshness of the ethanol on the nose.

To make a Whiskey Cocktail, the post 1855 "modern" way, set out a mixing glass (a pint glass will work). Add:

>2 dashes (1/4 tsp) Angostura Aromatic bitters
>1 tsp simple syrup (1:1 sugar/water ratio)
>1 jigger (2 oz) whiskey

Fill glass at least 2/3 full with ice (smaller cubes of about 3/4” per side work best)

Stir for at least 30 seconds to mix and chill-dilute without letting aeration bruise the velvet of the liquor.

Strain into a chilled cocktail goblet and garnish with a lemon zest with minimal pith, cut about 1” x 3”, twisting zest-side-down over the drink to express the oil, rubbed on the rim and put into the drink.

To make a whiskey cocktail the old fashioned way, set out an old-fashioned (or rocks) tumbler. Add:

>1 lump of sugar (La Perruche Pure Cane Sugar Cubes are perfect for this) size does not matter.
>2 dashes (1/4 tsp) Angostura Aromatic bitters
>1/4 oz water

Muddle the above ingredients into cocktail water without fully dissolving the sugar. Add:

>1 ice cube (1 1/4” per side)
>1 jigger (2 oz) whiskey
>2nd ice cube (historically rare, but recommended)

Garnish with a lemon zest with minimal pith, cut about 1” x 3”, twisting zest-side-down over the drink to express the oil, rubbed on the rim and put into the drink.

Insert a demitasse spoon into the drink. Take a sip. If more sweetness is desired, stir the drink.

Add these steps to make an Improved Whiskey Cocktail:

Apply 2 or 3 fine sprays (or rinse) of absinthe to your chilled cocktail goblet.

In a jigger (2 oz) measure, add 1 teaspoon of a good curacao or maraschino liqueur.

Fill to the top with the whiskey, so you now have a full jigger of liquor.

Optionally add a barspoon (1/2 teaspoon) of simple syrup, but it may be sweet enough from the liqueur alone.
