What are the best rums to try for under 50$? Is it true most spiced rums are garbage?

Whether or not spiced is garbage depends on your tastes. That said, some spiced is garbage -- Captain and that tier. If you like spiced, Sailor Jerry and Cruzan are nice. They can be mixed into whatever of course, but neat, they make a nice digestif, almost cognac-like in complexity, but of course usually much sweeter.

As far as non-spiced pirate juice goes, Mount Gay XO is fantastic. 50-ish a bottle, maybe a little less.

>> No.11570432

Rum is garbage. If you aren’t a fag, a pirate, a skanky woman, or from Puerto Rico or the Caribbean don’t drink that fag shit.

Yes, I have heard nothing but good things about Mount Gay XO. It's what I'm leaning towards right now

Im not sure which ones cost under $50 where you are but a couple of good ones which arent too expensive are

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera
Plantation XO 20th anniversary
El Dorado 15
Mount Gay XO

Spiced rums arent garbage if you like spiced rum. Which sounds painfully obvious but its true. Some people complain about them being too sweet. Just depends on whether thats what you like or not. Personally I do. Spiced rum probably gets away with using worse quality rum, as it can be hidden by adding additional flavours - but there are still good options out there.

Its not the best available, and it wont change your world, but its a solid choice.

That's what I've heard , that spiced uses low quality rum and hides it with extras.

I've heard plantation is very sweet

Can't recommend to stay away from sailor Jerry enough. Straight it tastes horribly sugary and mixed tastes off. I've found Captain Morgan to be a better mixer

Flor de Cana is a good rum. Need to try plantation but according to rumratings it should be one of the best values

>> No.11570474

I meant to say in the OP, I want one for straight sipping, not too much mixing.

It probably depends what you are used to drinking. If you dont really drink spirits then you might not find it sweet. If you are used to Islay whisky then you probably will.

There are definitely decent spiced rums available, and you get what you pay for. Avoid Captain Morgans as its trash.

Sure, if you like funk, choose a Jamaican rum. However, the patrician's choice is zacapa

Ron Abuelo has been good to me. Treat it like a whiskey. I like mine with a bit of bitters and lemon.

>> No.11574139

My vote is for Ron Zacapa. I used to work for a Dominican master technician named Paul and he swore by it. I bought him a bottle for Christmas one year and this hard as fuck old man started tearing up saying it was the only thing anyone had gotten him for Christmas. Can't beat great memories and those always go well with a great bottle of spirits. Cheers!

Pussers or Woods, if you can't get those get Havana Club. Get something gun powder proof that isn't like drinking everclear
don't bother with Kraken, it's not horrible but it's too strongly spiced, you can taste more caramel than rum
Cheap spiced rum is nice for mixing
