There's a food court in a mall around the corner from where I work. I go there every day and alternate between a KFC, a Taco Bell, and a Chinese place. I always come in at the exact same time and order the exact thing at each place respectively.

Occasionally the cashier will comment on this asking it I want my usual. When this happens I boycott the food court for a month or 2 until they have forgotten about me and bring sandwiches every day until then.

Sometimes the only good part of the day was when a regular stopped by. You'd get to know them a little better each time and would work hard to provide the absolute best service you could so they left in a better mood than they came in. It was very gratifying -- made you feel like you were still somehow doing the world some real good despite being relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

I remember my family and I used to go to this mall with an arcade and a small food court throughout the early to mid 2000s. My siblings and I would play on the machines while our parents shopped. At the end of the day my dad and I would go get a kid's special at the Chinese place, 2 chicken balls with noodles and sauce. There was usually one very cheerful man running the small restaurant. After a while he started recognising us and asking if we wanted the usual, even though we only went to that mall twice a month at most. It was nice. Eventually I grew out of that arcade, and the mall itself grew rundown. My dad would still swing by it sometimes and get me the kid's special. A few years ago a new Chinese spot opened up near me serving basically the same kind of food, but the staff there just don't have the same enthusiastic energy as the man behind the counter in that mall food court. Every once in a while I think about going back, but I'm afraid he won't be there. He's probably forgotten me anyways.

I love being a recognized regular. Is this an autistic injoke I'm missing? My favorite taco joint was my haunt around noon on a Sunday for like three straight years. The same bartender was on at that time every week. He was an incredible bro and a fantastic drink crafter. As soon as I sat down, he'd put in my appetizer and bring me over a drink. Then we'd talk a bit and catch up. Then he would bring me quality cocktails every time my glass was empty, charge me rail drink prices, and void my appetizer in the PoS. He hated the owner and loved giving away product. I ended up tipping him the discount difference, but I'd rather pay him directly anyway.

For me it's kinda like I really don't want to inconvenience another person. I constantly think, what if they don't want to talk to me. The only way for me to talk to someone new is if they start the conversion first, and even then the conversation will often die down quickly because I think what if they only asked out of politeness and don't actually want to talk?
Only if I know someone really well for a few months already I can start to believe that they don't actually secretly hate me, but even then that's not the end of it, inviting someone somewhere, giving compliments, asking for help or advice, calling someone to talk or anything else that goes outside what I'm used to and feels safe in brings up similar spiraling thoughts.
I met a former classmate that worked as a recruiter in my line of work she gave me her business card and told me to call her. I never did because was constantly thinking, what if she's busy right now and can't talk.
