Could be you're drinking terrible wine. Most wine isn't, but some is.
Could be you're drinking it at the wrong temperature. High alcohol and high sugar wines for instance should not be served at room temperature contrary to popular belief, it makes them taste unbalanced.
Could be you're drinking it with the wrong foods or with no food. High tannins for example require animal fat to balance things out. Low acidity wines are not very good when consumed with vegetarian fare.

The other day I went straight to a central California vineyard for a wine tasting. I tried 18 total wines from 6-shot flights at 3 vineyards. The attendant was talking my head off about the soil quality and "notes" and some shit while all I could think about was paying $8 for what tasted like salted cough syrup.

I can sympathize. I've acquired every taste I've tried to acquire. I can drink any liquor straight, I can appreciate any beer, etc. I can NOT appreciate wine. I try to go through a bottle a month and have done this for the past ~1.5 years. Some bottles are $15, some are $80, one was $110. Every single red wine tasted like ass. I tried pairing most of them with different foods, drinking them at different temperatures, etc. I just can't enjoy it.

I occasionally wonder if it's similar to the cilantro meme, because that also tastes like ass to me. Actually, the ass-taste of cilantro is very similar to the ass-taste of red wine.
