I wanna get into whisky, mainly the differences between the types, what the fuck the difference is if the barrel wood is different, etc just beginner shit. Any Whiskybros on here able to help?

I've had JD, Seagram's 83, and some off-brand local shit in Egypt (idk what it was, I was at an all-inclusive hotel and I didn't want to pay north of $15 a shot for fucking JD when I could get local shit for free)

Can you differentiate the different levels of smokyness?

Nope.
I can pretty much tell what the theme is for a drink.
Like, when I tried JD, I could tell "this is for drinking while partying and wanting to get drunk"
When I tried Seagrams 83 I could tell it was for subtler shit
When I tried that Egyptian shit I could tell it was for when you had no other options

What is the Evan Williams of Scotch, i.e. the cheapest available that's actually respectable?

If you wanna get fucked up, just go cheapest. Otherwise, if you wanna really get into it, you'll have to do your homework and learn your geography.

First and foremost, you'll have to set a price range for yourself. There's no point in exploring shit that you can't afford right now. Whiskey depends on the region and the grain. Assuming you're in Egypt, start with the cheapest shit you can find. If nothing else, it'll set a baseline to work from, and since cheapest usually means shittiest, it'll also teach you what to avoid going forward (unless you just wanna get drunk).

Second, pick a major whiskey region. You can go American (US/Canada), Euro (Scotch/Irish), or Asian (Jap mostly). I'd recommend US since most drinks are unoffensive, not extremely complex, and fairly priced. I wouldn't recommend starting with a scotch since a lot are smoky and vegetal. And Jap is probably hard to get. Most US whiskeys (bourbons) are majority corn-based so expect a bit of sweetness from them.

Third, keep a log of what you've tried and the flavors or aromas that you can distinguish in the drink, what you like/disklike, how the taste changes when you add a few drops of water, etc. Build on from there.

Fourth, read more about whiskeys and watch some whiskey reviews on Youtube. Ralfy and Horst Lüning are two good resources.

Famous Grouse. I'm not really a scotch guy but when I need it for a cocktail I get this. My friends who are into scotch say it's great for the price point.

Dis nigga knows his shit. This is good info here and a very good starting point. The other thing to possibly look at is what the whiskies are made of as some may prefer one grain over another/have allergies they can avoid. i.e. if you're allergic to corn, avoid Bourbons as they're by law 51% corn (most use 65-75%corn).

I take back what I said about Glenmorangie 10 being the EW of Scotch. I'd forgotten about Grants and Dewars White.

The JD of Scotch would probably be JW Red.
