Really depends on where you live. While chains are everywhere, in some parts of the country they're the only options. As far as pizza goes this is especially true in places where Italian immigrants didn't settle 100 years ago. In places with a history of Italian American immigrants there are usually a lot of local independent options in addition to chains. In places like that chains are often looked down upon.

Seems like I'm the only person IN THE WORLD that legitimately likes Papa John's over Pizza Hut and Dominos. They're the only place whose pizza tastes like pizza and not just a pound of grease or low quality shit. Maybe it's because the other chains where I live suck so hard in comparison. Last week I tried Pizza Hut again, the pizza was paper thin, and the crust over compensated for that fact. It was terrible. As far as politics go, I don't give a fuck. I don't like it but I also don't dislike it. It serves a purpose when the local joint that has limited hours on the same block as I live on is closed. They're not open Sundays or holidays and close around 8-9pm. So sometimes if I want some pizza then papa johns serves it's purpose, it's sure better imo than dominos or pizza slut.

The big chain places are mostly what you do for quick lazy delivery on the cheap, and then do pickup or dine in at the fancier mom and pop places occasionally. Realistically though if the better places delivery and aren't priced too bad there is no good reason to even consider chains. Unfortunately many nicer places don't deliver and are pickup only.
