Michelle Obama tried to change school lunches to make it more nutritional but kids didn't like it as much and it generated a lot of food waste. Conservatives jumped on the matter screeching like baboons (which sums up party politics on both sides these days). Now that Trump's in charge all that got rolled back.

And no, it's not just what the government feeds, it's what people in general eat here. Supermarkets are full of bland processed food and people are fat as fuck. That's not a coincidence.

Due to the idiotic bureaucracy behind the school lunch program, where you had to include X amount of fruit/vegetables/whatever in each meal, schools quickly realized that they could double up on whatever the cheapest knockoff-Sysco bulk products were. You see pictures of breadsticks/tiny pizza squares with a roll and fries, since dipping/pizza sauce and fries both count as vegetables. Always a roll and fries, those must have been the absolute cheapest (at my school the fry serving would be much smaller than in OP). Any required fruit serving would take the form of a dixie cop of shitty fruit cocktail that no one would ever get.
Actual meat or satisfactory food was a rare treat, usually once or twice a week there'd be something like a chicken sandwich or nachos.
Most kids, even the poor ones, would just get a tray and immediately throw it out, or trade their chocolate milk for a fraction of someone else's desirable side.

>kids didn't like it as much
It wasn't that they didn't like it, it was that the distribution rules were retarded.
You'd be allowed literally one or two bites of actual food, and the rest of your tray would be full of shitty bread and expired fruit. If you didn't qualify for free lunch it was actually a complete ripoff. Probably less than 300 calories even if you ate everything, and it was some kids' only reliable source of food.

It really depends on which place are available near you. I live in an college town with a Meijer, a Kroger, and several Asian groceries nearby. If I lived in somewhere more isolated, I would have to rely on Walmart or something which is less reliable for fresh produce.

But with what I have, I often see people at Meijer check out with far more processed food than actual fresh produce. In comparison with other countries, there are fewer and smaller farmer's market and less variety of produce than a randomly chosen town in an Asian country.

The problem is they just took away all the tasty stuff and didn't replace it with anything. Kids were complaining about going hungry.

Walmart has dozens of variety's of fruit and vegetables. People buy processed garbage not because they have no other option but because they dont know how to cook.
