What foods have the longest shelf lifes?
I'm in the Arctic, and need supplies. Keeping things cold and dry is no problem. What are some tasty things that last a long time?
Obviously canned things, but I don't want to eat spaghetti O's all winter. I've got some Campbell's chowder and chili bowls. Some Pace Ready Meals. Alcohol. Popcorn. Deenz and Makrell in tins.

Give me recommendations.

Dried grains, beans, seeds, nuts, nut/seed pastes, dried fruit. All of it is optimal for half a year. A year is fine. The oils eventually rancidify and taste bad. If you don't want to deal with pre-soaking or pressure cooking, lentils, matpe, mung, dals cook fast. Dals tend to be the gassiest in my experience. The others aren't bad if you have an efficient gut ecosystem from having already been eating whole plant foods for a while.

Not really available up here. Sunflower seeds are expensive, and I don't really care for the mess they make. Dried fruit is more expensive than jerkey, I'll just eat the canned shit.

Could you get a shitload of frozen fish, fruit, veggy mixes and stir fries to your station?
Those will be as good as new even after a few years and make really good meals together with the usual pasta/rice/millet.

do you have a hunting license?
do you have a gun?

if not you could try to sweet talk someone into sellung you half a buck or something for cheap you just need to cut it in usable pieces and have a big enough freezer

all grains have a long shell life
cooked food if.frozen can last up to.3months so you could prep a bunch of food freeze it and eat it for 3 months

Interesting idea. I'll do that when I get back to a warmer climate, we don't have either of those things here, and I don't like pancakes. I'm a waffle guy.

>>11251053
There's not a lot of wildlife up here. Random rabid arctic fox, might see a Musk Ox once a month, or a Polar Bear. It's starting to get to the night season though, half way there. The continuous daylight finally ended last month, and next month should start the continuous night.
I'm wanting to know what foods, like dry goods, last longer than their 'expiration' date. I've ate chips, mac'n'cheese, beer, etc that tasted fine after their 'best before' date. I'm looking for more stuff I can buy that will last, and I can munch on for easy calories.

Dude, there's nothing up here but dirt and snow. We get food shipped into port via boat, or flown in. When storm season starts, we've got what we've got. I want to buy some shit that tastes good past its expiration date. I don't want to be eating canned/frozen food all winter if I can help it.

I can stay up here for as long as I want. This is my first year. Got up here during the summer.
>What do you do there? What made you want to do a stay in the Arctic?
It's just somewhere new, where I've never been. I've been all over the world. I'm on my third passport in 12 years.
>Do you like it and would you recommend it to other people?
Meh, not really. It's kinda boring. Maybe visit for a week or two. Once you've seen a glacier and an iceberg in a bay, you're pretty much seen it. The constant daylight in summer sucks. Pretty sure the constant night that's incoming is going to be worse. Shit's expensive too. Satellite internet is dumb slow and very expensive. Doesn't work when the weather is bad. Today it's clear, so the speed is 'fast'. It's usually slower.

>Also, can you bake? Get stuff for pizza and freeze it. Hard to get bored of pizza.
Yeah, have a convection oven. I'd love to make pizza, but we can't get all the ingredients. Probably the worst part too, pizza is one of my favorite foods. Bought a couple frozen pizzas, the smaller, single serving type. Haven't tried them yet.

What is it that you can't get? Flour, salt, oil, yeast, water for the dough. Sauce is optional. Cheese and other toppings are hard to come by or expensive? It would be a lot easier to help if we knew what all is hard to come by or ridiculously expensive there.

>> No.11252726

>>11252696
Can't get the yeast, and
>Cheese and other toppings are hard to come by

It's mostly dry goods, canned goods, and frozen foods. They've got frozen meals, and instant meals that don't need freezing. Everything is expensive, unless it is past its Sell By date. Then it's 75% off. Think of a supermarket, with no fresh food in it.

So, stuff like, noodles. Do they ever go bad? I can make soups or pastas, we have the stuff for that. Frozen meats, like beef and pork, so I can make dishes with them.

The fuck.
Move a couple hundred miles just past the nearest Russian border and you'll be swimming in that stuff. Been to far north of Russia recently. Every shop = a whole aisle of various nuts, seeds, dried fruit etc, costing peanuts (pun unintended), and excellent quality.

Also, dried fish sold as a beer snack. Aisle with beers and dried fish hanging in between.
