Throw in a handfull of real cheese, a good grind of black pepper, and a little dash of Worcestershire and your favorite hot sauce.

Feel free to get weird with the cheese, the emulsifying salts in the packet that came with the box will help even the driest, hardest cheeses incorporate their flavor into the sauce without fucking up the texture.

Cook with more water+salt and mix constantly to get rid of any starch. Add ingredients normally but use more milk and add 1 slice of cheese, you want it to be a bit soupy (use the empty cheese pouch to measure milk, its just a bit more than needed). Serve in a bowl. Add pepper and some hot sauce and eat with some toast.
I hate when mac and cheese gets sticky, it makes it taste like leftovers.

I successfully improved on it by breaking away from the instructions. The trick is: use no milk. Only butter. Use 4-6 ounces depending on how wet or dry you want it to be. I prefer 4. And mix it all in. It's fucking delicious and full of flavor. When I use milk, it comes out watered down and bland. But like this? It's like super cheese and flavor injection.

>cook up some meat (i go with chicken or sausage)
>remove meat, let it rest, and put in some onions and garlic
>cook onions down till sweating, then add a wine or chicken stock.
>season with salt/pepper and red pepper flakes (very important for a cheese dish). reduce wine (chicken stock) down, scrape up the bits in the bottom of the pan.

This, but unironically. These are cheap ass throw-away hotdogs, but they go great in box mac & cheese for some reason.

I honestly would make the mac & cheese like the directions call for, but at the same time slice those specific hotdogs into little medallions. I would fry them with some onions and mushrooms. After mac is done, add the packet cheese, some extra, then the hotdogs
