How good is McDonalds on the scale of Merican fast-food chains anyway?
I've understood it's supposedly the same EVERYWHERE and here in Finland local chains blow it out of the water.

That's exactly what they did for the majority of their corporate existence. Even Julia Child praised the quality of their fries at the time. Then during the late 80's (IIRC) the vegetarians found out and pitched a fit. As a result McD's switched to a trans-fat based oil instead. That's kind of odd, really. Other than breakfast which is not a bum deal nutritionally nor that bad, no one you know should eat there more than once a month, if that. And, it should be like for a cold drink, and a little something to tide you over for whatever reason you can't do something else: ex, pouring down rain requires a drive-thru or get soaked, 3am and your plane just landed and there's no food in the house when you get there, 99c giant sweet tea, kid's meal where you don't need to unhook 3 baby seats in the mini van just to get them some apple slices and nuggets, cheapest option for a ice cream stop post-game, or something like that.

It's bottom tier, except for breakfast.
There is objectively nothing wrong with their coffee nowadays, nor an egg mc muffin sandwich. They do have eggs, sausage, pancakes, hashbrowns about equal quality as other breakfast choices. Top tier drive-through chain breakfast might be starbucks or Einstein bagels. But sitting down somewhere that actually has baked goods, McDonalds blow.

I might go to McDonald's while traveling knowing there is a clean bathroom that isn't a hassle to use. If I have to pay to use a bathroom in some busy downtown kind of area, and I want no meal, just a cold soda and I am customer enough to use a bathroom for free.
