I make more than most starting college grads and as much as most trades. The other guy was honestly exaggerating, but 15% is kind of an insult. The expected tip is 18% for fair service, 20% for good, and 22% or more for really great service. The restaurant expects a server to make at least 18% on average on all tables and the server pays a "tip out" to other service staff: the hosts who secure your table with an available server, the bartender who makes your drinks, and the busser who cleans up after your lazy ass. Some places the cooks are tipped out, but not most. Anyway, the server has to pay a certain percentage of their sales out to the restaurant for other staff, so they don't keep all of what you leave, either.

If you left me a 10% tip on a $200 check at my job, thinking $20 would be enough for what I did, I would only get to keep $12 of it. Think about that next time: you don't just pay the server, but the entire staff.
