femanon here. and I just have to say FUCK people who tip less than $5 after any meal out. I don't care if you're "just picking up" or your bill is "only 10 dollars." YOU HAVE TO tip at least $5. You move up past that when your bill goes past twenty bucks, YOU DON'T MOVE DOWN BECAUSE YOU'RE A CHEAP PIECE OF SHIT WHO ORDERS FUCKING WATER AND AN APPETIZER. How the fuck am I supposed to support myself when cheap fucks like the one I just served give me three fucking dollars to wait their table. So fucking sick of selfish people who do this, smfh.

I work as a server and make on average $20 an hour, because I'm personable, funny, and good at my job. More on holidays, less on boring Tuesdays, but the sentiment is the same. After tax and tipout I take home around $450 weekly for just about 32 hours of work.

It's not practical. If everyone acquired an education and wanted a "good job," it would drive down competitive wages for everyone and the value of an education would drop dramatically. There are always going to be shitty jobs that MUST be done, from food to sanitation. The best solution is to raise wages enough to satiate the lower class in their garbage positions as the literal backbone of our overly-commercialized economy. This keeps them where they probably belong while also keeping the value of an education high enough that it is worth it for people to commit to becoming something greater.

There isn't an endless amount of "good jobs" and there isn't an endless amount of shitty low-class workers either, unless you want to keep importing mass amounts of brown people to do these jobs and let them overpopulate low-income areas. There are so many repercussions to this selfish mentality that "If you don't succeed, it's entirely your fault" that I'm surprised old white people even still bother with it. Do you want to live in a country where white people are the minority? That's what is going to happen as more and more of the American labor force drops out to live on the nanny state. You live in the same amount of poverty, but don't actually have to do anything. This leaves positions desperately open and employers desperate to fill them, even with immigrants. Then you get the monkey-chain into the US from Jose and his cousin and his cousin's cousin and his cousin's goldfish's last owner etc.

Since it's not a real job, it's not a service we need in society, hence why it's barely paid anything at all and people performing this useless activity should be better off doing something productive like building houses, if they want to earn enough money to survive. Why do we have servers at all, if we don't need them? You didn't have to try for shit in your life, so that's pretty rich coming from someone as entitled as you seem to be.
No, not just anyone can improve their situation, and also, not everyone can altogether, either. If everyone tried harder, the general order of things would stay the same: "trying hard enough" isn't what gets you there, you stupid literal boomer. You have to be better than others in order to move up the ladder in society. If someone moves up, that means someone else is moving down. Many factors play into a person's ability to "move up." The household income in the place you grew up is the single greatest predictor of academic and financial success: greater than color, culture, place of residence, etc. If your parents are poor, you are exponentially more likely to be poor as well, and the opposite is true: if you are born to rich parents, you are more likely to end up successful, not by ANY merit of your own, but by the grace afforded to you by your parents. Is this really fair to the children who never had a say to whom they were born? You would feel very differently on the subject if you had had anything but a silver spoon upbringing.

You have no idea how the real world of employment, job demand, and wages works; I don't doubt you've never held a real job, never studied business or economics, and somehow still think your opinion is worth anything.
Tell you what, I'll give you the $2.13 your opinion is worth, and if you want more, you'll have to 'try harder.' Retard.

You're beyond out of touch if you think that's the big issue here. Most low-skill laborers can't afford food and live on food stamps and other government assistance - just a reminder, you pay for this. 48 minutes of your 40-hour week is solely dedicated to food stamps.

Again, and I'm not sure how hard this is to remember or whether you are capable of reading at all, but I make plenty of money waiting tables. I make more than most starting college grads and as much as most trades. I don't have a problem with money, because my work is valuable; I work in fine dining in a rich neighborhood where only white people come in despite being a pretty black city. I usually expect about $10/person in tips and usually get it, too.

Many other people are not in this situation. My dad's dad wasn't allowed by his parents to finish high school because they needed him to work on their farm to support the family. What shot at life did he ever have?
Worse yet, he was so salty at his lot in life that he shamed my father out of getting a college education. Anyway, that's besides the point. I'm not complaining for myself because I'm capable.
>The only reason people make a career out of waiting tables is because they are worthless people.
Or because they like to have a low-commitment, highly competitive job where you don't have to pay taxes on all your income, can drink at work, get to joke and laugh with people all day, don't have to show up early, don't have to work on major holidays, etc. I like waiting tables.

What are the cons of raising the minimum wage? It seems like the country has done this, as well as any other first-world country, to compensate for the changing economy over many many decades. Yet somehow it's now a problem? Why is that?
>inb4 businesses can't afford it
Why put businesses before people? If a business can't afford to pay its necessary employees, surely it doesn't "deserve" to operate?
>inb4 a burger flipper shouldn't make as much as a welder
When you raise the minimum wage, skilled labor wage must also rise to compete, or they will lose their skilled labor force to easier work for the same pay. Not only people working at minimum wage benefit from a raise.
>inb4 people will be forced to do more work to compensate for higher wages
Conflicting studies suggest that in places where the minimum wage has already been raised to $11, $13, even $15 hourly, there has been less than 10% of a drop in low-skill employment, with some studies citing numbers as low as fractions.
>inb4 it will cause prices to rise making the initial minimum wage hike useless
The proposed minimum wage hike is doubled. Prices of food and commodities are not going to fucking double. The market won't accommodate that. Many businesses will find cost-cutting opportunities to compensate, including better employee retention, which benefits workers, and stricter market focus (smaller variety of goods offered, more specialization) which some may argue harms consumers but I don't think that would be the case. If you trust the market, then trust the market, but you can't let it go off the rails, either.

It eliminates jobs, or at the very least forces them into the black market.

>>>inb4 businesses can't afford it
Those that run a very tight margin cannot, and those people will lose their jobs. Those which have a higher operating margin can afford to raise pay for some people but will have to enact some combination of price hikes, firing, or pay/hour cuts in order to make the numbers work out. People tend to think that the boss is filthy rich and could easily pay it all out of pocket, but the average restaurant owner is far from a millionaire. (Remember that the restaurant industry has a crazy high failure rate already).

Fewer than half of restaurants in the US are small businesses or independently owned. I work at a franchise. The owner would be a millionaire if he wasn't retarded. Apparently he made tons of investments and 95% of them went bad, now this restaurant is his only remaining good investment, and he uses the income to pay off debt from his other 50,000 bad investments and still is paid handsomely and just bought a new house this year. Lol. Have you ever researched this? Wait, I already know the answer. No, you haven't. It's the other way around. The franchise owner pays the corporate office. The franchise owner is also required to purchase their ingredients and supplies from the corporate office, even if they can get a better deal elsewhere. The franchisee running a restaraunt doesn't make much. The corporate bigwigs who own the overall corp do, but there's only a handful of them for literally thousands of restaurants. The middle class destroys itself. Would you spend more for less to support a local business, knowing they pay a good wage to others in your community and may one day benefit you? Or would you go the "bang for your buck" route and favor corporations over local business for instant gratification? This is already the problem. Ensuring worker rights isn't a jab at good businesses.

You're having babby's first economic discussion, I know you're nervous, but you don't have to keep typing that.
>the same financial pressures squeeze everyone
No, it won't. Many places already pay an above-minimum wage to their employees and can easily afford to meet higher mins. It will force some businesses to streamline and this is an overall improvement too. It promotes employee retention programs ie incentives and benefits because the cost of losing an employee and then hiring and training a new one is a great expense, even to corps.
>I actually know a few people who own franchise restaurants. They make in the range of $70-100k a year.
Owning what, a KFC?
>The franchise owner is also required to purchase their ingredients and supplies from the corporate office, even if they can get a better deal elsewhere.
The franchisee licenses the name and trademark from the franchisor and the franchisor supplies the franchisee with their menu, paperwork, training materials, online support, in-store technical support, and in many cases proprietary equipment.
For proprietary recipes which are pre-made by the parent company, yes, the franchisee is required to buy those ingredients - think in the vein of a franchise Pizza Hut buying the Pizza Hut specific sauce mix. Yet, they can and will purchase whatever cans of sliced green olives or chunked pineapple that is offered by the normal foodservice supplier.

Don't offer a job that people can't afford to work. You can't really tell people not to have kids, it's basically what a human is programmed to do. It's nearly akin to saying "Don't eat if you can't afford it."

>Just because I ordered the steak instead of tendies doesn't make your job any harder so I'm not giving you more.
You're going to take longer eating a larger and more expensive meal, hogging up a table in my section for more time. Most people expect to be paid for duration of work, servers are no different.
The other guy was honestly exaggerating, but 15% is kind of an insult. The expected tip is 18% for fair service, 20% for good, and 22% or more for really great service. The restaurant expects a server to make at least 18% on average on all tables and the server pays a "tip out" to other service staff: the hosts who secure your table with an available server, the bartender who makes your drinks, and the busser who cleans up after your lazy ass. Some places the cooks are tipped out, but not most. Anyway, the server has to pay a certain percentage of their sales out to the restaurant for other staff, so they don't keep all of what you leave, either.

If you left me a 10% tip on a $200 check at my job, thinking $20 would be enough for what I did, I would only get to keep $12 of it. Think about that next time: you don't just pay the server, but the entire staff.

This is literally not true at all for faggots waiting tables. In fact, in the past 4 years straight, attendance at restaurants across the country (also known as "eating out") has declined significantly. You're full of shit and over-entitled is all.
>Yeah, I'm the loser who talks about subjects he doesn't understand.
Actually I understand completely and, again, you trying to compare some shit-tier easy as "job" like waiting tables to actual low-skill laborers in warehouses, factories, and other environments (which is where the shortages actually are) just makes it obvious that you're a whiney little soft bitch who can't handle actual work. Like you could have literally any other low-skill job anywhere and people would be more receptive but even people who have never waited tables before know how easy your job is, not to even mention the millions of people who have waited tables themselves and know it's a cake walk. Basically nut up and go find a better job if waiting tables is too hard for you, crybaby. At the end of the day, you're the least important part of the business machine between customers who want a good product and a business owner who delivers. You're not integral, scarce, or special. You're replaceable tomorrow. It's that simple.
