This was a followup study of the season 2 participants of the show "The Biggest Loser". All participants ate a calorie restricted (CICO) diet and exercised 4-8 hrs each day in a completely controlled and monitored environment, there was no lying about their diet or exercise. This show was recently cancelled, not because of low ratings, but because it came out that the "vitamins" that they were contractually required to take every day also included heavy doses of speed to keep their metabolic rates up. The lawsuits are ongoing.

As for permanent damage to your metabolism it only occurs if you carry on for 3-4 months of weight loss. Which is why it's recommended to maintain after that time period for a good 1-2 months and then restart cutting.
