I'm American and I've only seen "free" salads as part of a larger set, like a prix fixe menu, and in such cases it's about the size of your fist, not a meal sized salad

I've also been to Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona, and I had a few salads in those cities. In each case it cost money, so I feel like something is escaping me here

I mentioned those cities because they're not depressing meat lockers like Oslo, where I have also been (also Bergen). The closest thing to a vegetable I saw the whole time I was there was a leaf of lettuce on an open faced sandwich, a few sprigs of dill, and a lemon wedge. Otherwise everything I ate was basically pasty and white. Oh, onions I guess. Potatoes. If you can even call those vegetables.

When you say "salad", what words is that in your language so I can look it up? Because I doubt it's like anything I had in Western Europe. Do Norwegians think "salad" just means "something served cold"?

Frenchfag here, salad can come a side depending on the dish. A steak frites will have of course the steak and fries and usually a little salad. If you order stuff like pasta though don't expect a salad but you're dumb as fuck to order pasta in the first place at a restaurant anyway. Basket of bread always come free though, even if you order pasta so if you wanna go turbo carbonator you're good to go.
